“Ocean beauty. Nasty facilities!”
Reviewed 29 May 2011

Don't stay here if you can't handle poor facilities! The outhouses are disgusting! I don't think they are ever cleaned! Human waste all over the inside of the hole, liquid splashes up... I will spare you the rest. Facilities in the main bath house ate clean however very small. Toilets are very low to the ground, and stalls are almost too small to sit in. Showers are $1 for 10 min and are also small.
Campsites are nice, on the ocean. Some are wooded. Quiet time is 10pm-8am and is strictly enforced. The rest of the time expect children dog and vehicle noise. Typical family camping.

You know you're going to a good place when the person working at the State Tourism Info Centre goes "Oooo, Recompence. Nice Place".

Of the many campgrounds in Maine, this was the only one we got with sea-side camping at an affordable price. We had to fore-go electric/water service to get sea-side, but the view was worth it. We probably had one of the more private sea-side sites (#160), with no adjacent neighbours. For those of you who want power and water, they had lovely wooded sites near the main office. They looked quite nice, and seemed nicely spaced out for some privacy.

There's lots for younger kids to do. Heck the place runs a day-camp for the area, and your welcome to enroll your child. I'm not sure of the price for that though.

Freeport and LL Bean and nearby, maybe ten minutes on some rough roads. Makes things in the campground nice and quiet at night though, no nearby highways or interstate noises. Old Orchard Beach is 30-40 minutes away, a perfectly acceptable distance for those of us who want to "set up a base camp ONCE for a few days, and then tour the area" vs "move as close as you can each time".

Our biggest problems were with the out-houses, and the main comfort station (Flush Toilets & Showers). The out-houses were very smelly, and even the Flush Toilet building stank (though that might have been a temporary plumbing emergency. They were fixing it all day as of when we left). Showers were okay, but the middle person definitely got the "left-over" hot water, not an assured flow of water.

Bottom Line: I would return. My wife would not, unless the outhouses were replaced with flush vault toilets.

During the summer of 2008 we stayed at this campground for a month. It was awesome. The kids went to farm camp and had a blast. I couldn't say enough about it. We went back in July and August 2009 and the place was very disappointing. Lots of partying, drinking and rowdy campers. They put huge Rvs next our tent. Previously, we had never seen an RV, only pop-ups. We were so disappointed after having a perfect experience in 2008. We are going back this year and hope to give them a second chance. The shower house is good but often showers 4 and 5 have low water pressure and are cold. They have one sink in the woman's bathroom and one in the men's. Not nearly enough for an entire campground of campers trying to shave, brush teeth etc.

This beautiful campground is only 30 mins from my house in the city but it feels like a distant place miles away in the country. The oceanfront sites are beautiful with great views of the bay. The farm is fun to explore with kids and the employees are always very friendly and accommodating.

On my last couple of camping trips, however, I've been kind of disappointed by the condition of some of the sites and general maintenance of the grounds. For $40 a night, I would expect the sites to be in better condition. Also, both of my last two trips have been ruined by rowdy campers drinking all night not obeying the quiet time of 10-7 which is a real turn-off when camping with young kids. I wish the staff would do more to enforce the quiet time hours.

Personally, I am not a fan of "car camping," but this is an exception! We had site 96, and it was amazing! Any closer to the water and we would have been swimming. The sounds of the lake were mesmerizing, lulling us to sleep and prodding us to wake up. Perfect location for sunset and sunrise. It was quiet (mind you, it was mid-May) peaceful, beautiful, and convenient. Reasonably priced as well, for the view we were getting. I will definitely be back.

We stayed at the Bayview cabin and were told that there were gas lights, a stove, bbq grill, pots, pans and utensils. Luckily we had plenty of lanterns and candles because the gas ones provided were extremely dim. There was a pot and a pan but they were too small and the only utensils were a few forks and plastic butter knives. So bring your own spatula, grill utensils, steak knives and cookie sheets. Lastly, the bbq grill provided was a tiny charcoal grill that was missing the racks, we would have brought our gas grill from home had we known. The sites are close together and most of the tent sites are right next to the road. Nice bay views but tough to swim unless you have a gradually sloping site.

This is my favorite campground on the coast of Maine. I'm originally from Maine but have been living in Boston for almost 10 years. This campground is close enough to everything but far enough away as well.

It's clean, comfy, there are showers and bathrooms with flushing toilets, laundry facilities, outhouses and faucets around the campground. The office even has food and other goods you might need. It's a simple but perfect campground. The location couldn't be better and when the tide is up you can swim. Being able to bring the dog was a huge plus.

We love the shore campsites as that is our preference. The campground has a website.

We also camped here in July 2005. We have reservations already for July 2007 and can't wait!
