We try to stop at the A1 Diner in Gardiner Maine every year on our way to Bar Harbor. We love it so much that we plan our itinerary so we can be here for supper. My husband had the Chicken Marbella, which we all loved. I had the Basque Chicken Paella, also good but more mildly flavored, which might be preferred by some. My son had the Kimchi Bacon Burger, which he really liked. The Warm Brownie Cup was to die for. We usually get their specials because they are always interesting and well prepared.

The diner really is a diner car, and there is oilcloth on the table and the booths are old wood. Everything has a solid and vintage feel. We love it.

It was a typical summer Sunday morning at the A-1--another gorgeous day in Vacationland--with the A-1's 40 seats taken and a patient line out the door in the brilliant sunshine. The line moved faster than expected.

It's no wonder. Inside the staff both at the counter and in the kitchen executed a perfect ballet. The wait staff smiled, moved efficiently, welcomed guests, took orders, served, attended to the details of coffee and other drinks, kept the back of counter clean and well stocked, and took time with each guest. There was never a feeling of being rushed.

The kitchen moved orders rather well considering the crowd. In fact, an order of a lovely asparagus quiche seemed to have just come from the oven, and it had. Every aspect of our meal met the high standards of the A-1 brand cuisine, to which the crowds and empty plates seemed to attest.

Surprisingly, too, the noise volume, given the crowd, was not that bad, in fact far, far better than most up-scale and trendy restaurants these days, where owners count on the deafening noise level to indicate success.

The A-1 Diner still is, well, A-1.

What a unique and interesting place. It's a fairly old diner that they have kept in great shape. Lots of interesting options on the menu. Was with a large group and everyone loved the food. Staff is very helpful and pleasant.

Never had lunch in a diner on stilts! This was a fun place for us to visit on vacation. The food was excellent! I had the roast beef, crispy onion, cheddar & horseradish sandwich. It was delicious. We also tried the corned beef hash and it also was excellent. The man running the front was super busy but took the time to talk with us and was so pleasant. I was amazed at his ability to juggle everything while keeping his cool. (being travelers, we had lots of questions for him) :) If I lived in the area I would eat here all the time.

We found this one on the 3D list - Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins. We expected a diner and maybe a dive, but we were very surprised to see this eclectic diner car mounted on poles next to a bridge. We were also very surprised by the fancy menu - I had crab cakes as my entree.

They have very surprising menu for a diner. The food was very good, including the plate of onion rings we had as an appetizer. Enough to share 4 ways.

Prices were reasonable. We were here for dinner, each of us had a beer, and the total cost out the door was $30 per person.

Not much else to see in Gardiner, but if you have time, do not miss this diner. Good food and a great experience.
