Allagash is a relatively new brewery with a focus on Austrian Trappist style beers. The plant is located just outside of Portland in a quiet industrial park; the beer is good and the presentation includes a sense of humor and style.
My group had just finished a 'virtual' tour and tasting at Shipyard where visitors get little attention. At Allagash, we were impressed with the professional demeanor and more formal tasting procedure. Each of the four beers we sampled were introduced with a description of their ingredients and characteristics. Tastings were generous and were served in large sized stemmed beer classes emblazoned with the company logo. We tasted light beers first and then darker vintages. All were excellent and many of our group bought beer to take home.
After the tasting, we were escorted onto the brewery floor where we learned about the brewing process, the bottling, and the aging process. The tour was comprehensive and the factory itself was spotless. We felt pampered and loved the attention from Katie, the tour coordinator.
