After spending extra for what I thought would be a hotel a step above some of the other chains, we were given a room in the basement. If you opened any window shade, people on the street were literally looking down at you through basement type windows which of course drew people's curiosity even more. Additionally, the room was under a kitchen or something because around 4 or 5 in the morning you could hear workers starting to bang around. The basement rooms all had drop ceilings and multiple maintenance/housekeeping type doors in the hallway adding to the feel of being on the bottom. I wanted to complain to someone at checkout but I wasn't even asked how my stay was so I just left, frustrated and out a couple hundred dollars for a one night stay. The basement rooms are 114-118.

The Rengency is located in a historic armory and in the heart of Portland. The service is great and the choice of restaurants in the hotels offers a little formal in one and informal, tavern in the other. They have undergone a renovation so all the rooms have been updated. They offer a full spa. We have stayed there a few times and never had a bad experience. We always attend the Portland Symphony Magic of Christmas show and this only a couple blocks away. We take the Downeaster Amtrak train and they are prompt in picking us up. Save the hassle of driving and take the train. Portland is a walking town and the Regency is in the middle of the town.

My husband and I stay at the Portland Regency Hotel & Spa every year for our anniversary in September. We love the rooms, the charm of the old building, The Armory Lounge, and the great service. This hotel has the best location on the Old Port. We recommend it to all of our friends and family travelling to Portland.

With another couple, my wife and I make an annual trek to Portland and coastal Maine. We’ve chosen the Regency as our Thu night accommodations for the past decade or so. We really enjoy the proximity to Old Port and the charm of the hotel. A renovated armory, the layout is quirky but comfortable. it's an easy walk to boutique shopping and great restaurants in this foodie town. Tucked downtown, swift valets make parking a breeze. The renovated rooms are first-rate. And we relish breakfast with long-standing servers like John at our beck and call. If you prefer a quiet, charming, smallish hotel close to the action to a predictable but serviceable chain hotel near the interstate, you will enjoy the Portland regency as we do.

Room tip: Not every room has been renovated. Get one of the newer ones for the best experience.

This hotel is a little more pricey than the standard hotels but it is well worth it. My husband and I loved the staff, the Armory pub on the bottom floor and the overall nostalgia of this hotel. I would highly recommend spending weekend here or longer. You cannot beat the location. You can walk to tons of restaurants and shopping. Also recommend getting a room with a balcony.
