Owner description: Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

Excellent cultural resource located on the mid-Maine coast with a collection of American art and art related to Maine. Some highlights include works by the Wyeths, Winslow Homer, Robert Indiana and Loise Nevelson.

“A lovely surpise on Maine's midcoast”
Reviewed 18 August 2009

We decided to overnight in Rockland just because...and to see what there was to see. Well, we saw incredible sights when we stopped into the Farnsworth Art Museum. Admission is, if I recall, $12 per adult. This is a must view.

We were fortunate enough to see the exhibit on Robert Indiana. It seems that there are three generations of Wyeth's on display in their three buildings.

The Farnsworth Art Museum is a gem on the Maine midcoast.

“Unexpected pleasure”
Reviewed 14 June 2009

Displays of some local art were nice enough but then you come to two rooms of Andrew Wyeth paintings. These are phenomenal. If you are a Wyeth fan you'll know. If you've never seen his work, this would be an excellent start.

Films about Andrew Wyeth were running constantly in the small theatre downstairs and worth watching.

“Wonderful experience”
Reviewed 30 September 2006

I am an art teacher from Alabama, and planned my honeymoon around a trip to the Farnsworth museum. I was impressed with the collection of the Wyeth family, as well as other contemporary artists represented. There was also an exhibit of literary based artwork while I was there. The work from regional artists was also impressive, and well representative of the experience I had expected from Maine.
I especially enjoyed the presentation of the artwork, and the buildings in which it is housed. The Farnsworth house was also a treat that enhanced my experiende. My husband is not well versed in art, but he even enjoyed the trip. I want to go back when I am in New England again.
