This was the best family vacation we have ever been on. We just got back from Disney World 6 weeks ago and my kids said it was no contest, they liked Medomak much better! The counselors were the best part! Great job all!

For those that cant quite figure out what to expect:

8:30-9:30 breakfast at tables of 10 which usually consists of 2 families of 4 and 2 counselors
9:30-12:30 activities divided into 5 age groups with one being adults. You do three different one hour activities. Things like archery, tennis, sailing, coffee roasting, arts and crafts, land sports, etc.
12:30-1:30 lunch same style as bfast
2:00-5:00 free time with lake activities. Life guards are on duty for swimming, kayaks, sail boats, canoes and a swim dock with diving board
5:00-6:30 free time most unwind and shower though on Monday they do a beer and cheese tasting
6:30-7:30 dinner
7:30-8:30 evening group activity (kickball, improv, talent show, square dancing, and our favorite-sunset cruise)
8:30- camp fire with jokes, songs and marshmallows

Rinse and repeat except Wednesday when there are no morning activities and you are encouraged to go out and explore Maine.

The kids loved it and my wife and i loved having our own activities yet we were still together most of the day.

Well done Medomak we will be back next year with more guests!

Surely you have heard someone remark upon dropping their kid at sleep away camp that they wished they could have stayed, too… Well, enter camp Medomak. First, Maine is a lovely place, rugged coastline, creative and skilled culinary movement, pristine historic towns, and lots of yoga and spa services to be had. That said, our whole family of poodles ascended upon camp for a week, well-knowing we would adopt a simpler way of life for 6 nights. Even before I could emerge from the car eager counselors ascended upon us and for the week we were carried on a wave of enthusiasm, activity, and non-stop party of families joking and playing together.
This is a great place to go if you want your kids to have a summer camp experience but you, or they, do not want to go alone. The counselors and staff, beautiful lake location, and attentive onsite owners really make this place special. “Special” has taken on its own meaning when it comes to vacation destinations, that intangible vibe you get from a place, which in the case of Medomak reflects a 100 plus year tradition of summer enrichment. Activities varied from improv comedy workshops to dance, yoga and a wacky homemade sport called SCAG that mashed together golf, crocket and soccer. Our girls loved the lakefront, a sweet little beach where counselors set up as lifeguards every afternoon and kids could swim out to the dock with a diving board or take out a paddle board or kayak. I even had a sculling lesson – loved it!
I read several of the recent reviews and agree on all the praise except the food. While they used fresh ingredients the execution was merely a cut above edible and there could have been more variety, so do not let this deter you, just adjust expectations to receive sustenance but not necessarily any meals to remember – except the lobster dinner, that is…
Go to Medomak with an open mind and take in the experience that has been thoughtfully created for you. To note: walk to the lake from cabins is intentionally about .2 mile to keep the waterfront undeveloped for all, so be sure that you are in shape enough for that, stepping over some tree roots and navigating stones and steps. Also, this is a small program with room for just twelve families per session, but it did not feel that way and we were still getting to know new people in the last couple days. (All the staff will know your names by the first day.) And lastly, having sessions made it more of a camp experience; many of the family camps are only a short few days at the beginning or end of the season, or run on a rolling basis, resort style. Medomak wrote the playbook on how to do this for families, and that is all they do, so this is not a side-program.

Room tip: All the cabins are arranged along a large meadow -- some receive morning sun and some afternoon sun, that is the only difference.

We just returned from a week at Medomak Family Camp. We left feeling rejuvinated with smiles on our faces. My husband and our kids, 9 and 7, loved the connections we made with other campers and loved the daily activities like fishing, dance, arts & crafts and archery. The kids "hang out" was the barn where they could play foosball, ping pong, basketball or board games. During the morning activities, adults could choose activities as well such as volleyball, nature hikes, making herbal spa creams, even take an escorted mile swim out to "Loon Island". Each evening there was a different activity for the entire family to enjoy (square dance, games, talent show, family sunset canoe trip). Last, but not least the meals were exceptional. I know the cook in each family loved not having to cook and clean for the week, but beyond that we felt good knowing our families were eating wholesome and nutriious meals. We will be back!

I just returned from a week at Medomak. They absolutely set the standard for a family camp. There is a good chance we will return to Medomak but we will definitely return to family camp. We had a fantastic time!

The food was outstanding. This could certainly change depending on staff, but I was extremely impressed by the variety, quality, freshness, and the different diets that were accommodated (vegetarian, vegan, and omnivore). The first night set the tone with perfectly roasted turkey, real mashed potatoes, green beans, fresh and local lettuces, and milk from the camp cow. Vegetarian options always available as well as alternatives for picky eaters.

Every morning the kids had their own set of activities by age group while adults had activity options, or the opportunity to read, hike, or do nothing at all. Last week I did morning stretch, yoga, SCAG, property hike, canoeing, and archery. My husband opted for woodcraft, ecology, primitive skills, and fishing (with the kids). Adults-only events included a beer and cheese tasting, a tour of a local distillery, and fitness. Every afternoon most families headed to the waterfront for swimming, boating, and crafts.

The cabins were clean and well kept (although no heat or A/C, just FYI), the property was lovely and well maintained, and the time unplugged was precious. The staff was competent and engaging and the family atmosphere was perfect. Kids made friends quickly and although supervised, also had some freedom to roam and create their own entertainment.

If you have a resort with spas and waiters in mind, this may not be for you. If birds as your soundtrack and trees as the backdrop tempt you, with good food to sustain you and active days to keep your whole family entertained, travel to Medomak.

This is a one of a kind family vacation without the running around from one attraction to another. Our family of 5 (including 2 teenagers and a 9 year old) all loved Medomak. The facilities are lovely, clean, and inviting. Food was great. Tons of activities to participate in, but no pressure to do anything. The key is the great staff and counselors. They truly create a warm, welcoming environment where everyone feels at home. Wonderful time with family, old friends, and new ones we met at Medomak. So glad we made the decision to give family camp a try!
