If you're looking for simple, clean, affordable, no-frills accommodations in a beautiful part of Maine, this is the place. These housekeeping cottages remind me of the kind I stayed in with my parents in the 1960s -- small and cozy, with plain furnishings. We stayed in a two-bedroom cottage (smaller ones are available), which includes a main room with table and chairs, a TV (we never turned it on), and a kitchenette (new fridge, toaster, and microwave; a small gas stove; sink; dishes, utensils, pots and pans, dish towels). One bedroom had bunk beds and a twin bed with closet and dresser; the other bedroom had a double bed and dresser. The bathroom is a tiny closet-size space just off the kitchen and includes the toilet and shower only -- the bathroom sink is actually in the kitchen. We found this arrangement quirkily charming.

The cottage was immaculate and had recently been painted and updated with new linoleum and indoor-outdoor carpeting just inside the front door. There was a wall AC unit that worked well. Beds were fairly comfortable, and bath towels were thick and plentiful. The people who run the place -- it seems to be family owned and operated -- are helpful and very nice.

One drawback: our cottage faced Route 1, which is the shore route and gets very busy during the day in the summer. Noise from the traffic was noticeable during the day but died down for the most part in the evening. The benefit of being on Route 1 is that you're minutes away from some beautiful beaches. Nearby restaurants like Cap'n Hook's, the Maine Diner, and Big Daddy's Ice Cream are very easy to get to, and many antique shops are also nearby on Route 1. These cottages look very plain and a little outdated from the road, but they are actually quite homey and comfortable.
