STARS restaurant in CHATHAM BARS INN

We visited this location in late July, 2017, peak of “the season.” This is one of the premier high end, luxurious locations on Cape Cod. The restaurant is part of Chatham Bars Inn, a five star resort located in a picturesque setting; STARS is located in a spacious comfortable room with special views of Chatham Harbor. The restaurant has a very skilled and attentive staff – knowledgeable of menu items, drinks list etc. Dinner guests are presented with an excellent menu of both regional seafood and traditional meat dishes. Every one in our party agreed to the superior quality of the food.

However there was also some consensus at our table of four that choices were over-priced within an overall impression of pretension. One example was that a “rack” of lamb meant just two chops atop of a piece of rolled shoulder of lamb -- somewhat disappointing. We all felt this was a very special dinner but not without a few shortcomings.

One warning: Do not get seated too near one of the several floor air conditioner vents. I was unfortunately seated directly over one such vent. The air stream was quite chilling and strong enough to raise the edge of the tablecloth. The hostess tried to make sure the vent was covered with what appeared to be a heavy menu cover, but this “lid” would not stay in place, causing some distraction throughout the meal.

Avoiding this problem will result in a great dining experience.

Beautiful location in a loverly building but lunch in the tavern was painfully slow. One in our party has a severe lactose intolerance, which we noted when we made the reservation, and told the hostess, and told our server, then ordered a salad with no cheese and the salad came with grated cheese on it. They eventually made it right but it was a lot of work to spend almost two hours for what turned out to be a mediocre lunch.

Columbus Day weekend welcomed a bountiful Autumn with an array of the most delicious foods prepared in outstanding fashion. We dined at all the resort restaurants, STARS, Sacred Cod Tavern and the Beach House Grill. Each location uses fresh produce from their own farm in various dishes. Each dish has a unique freshness and flavor that is a real treat to any one looking for an unforgettable dining experience. We dined at the Beach House Grill on their last day of the season and enjoyed the legendary lobster nachos and the catch of the day. Always an upbeat and fun place to dine by the water while taking in these beautiful early fall days and evenings. The Sacred Cod Tavern has the quintessential clam chowder ( a must) but also offers a delectable chicken paillard salad with farro and shaved vegetables.
STARS had just introduced their new menu and it was filled with great choices like the farm beet salad, burrata made with heirloom tomatoes and cavatellie with mushrooms and fennel. My daughter's favorite is the crab cake because there is no other crab cake such as this. It is entirely made with crab meat and not with mounds of bread crumb. As an entree, the fall squash risotto was incredible. I paired it with a sparkling rose and with the added view from STARS, it was perfection! The service is five star as is the ambiance and overall elegance and charm that radiates throughout the Inn.

The lunch restaurant at Chatham Bars Inn doesn't deliver the quality of experience you'd expect at a resort like this. They are most certainly understaffed -- a few servers working that big, noisy and crowded room is just not enough. Given the dinner menus at lunch, told the bartender was just swamped so drinks were very late, delivered the wrong food twice (and saw the same thing happen at other tables), and it was mistake after mistake. On an autumn Saturday, we were looking for a leisurely experience. Instead, it was just something that we were wishing was over and done. On top of it, the food was just OK. Nothing special. I felt badly for the servers who were clearly being overwhelmed. it didn't feel like anyone was really in charge. Dinners are served in a different room, and appear to be an entirely different experience. Hopefully a better one.

Sunday afternoon at 3 PM., Columbus Day weekend. All the unoccupied tables were dirty and cluttered with dirty glasses, and after waiting a few minutes we noticed the lack of staff, so I went inside to inquire if there was service outside. I was told at the waitress station that there was no service outside. There were 3 hosts standing around at the time. This is not the first time that we experienced lack of service on the porch and an over abundance of other staff with apparently nothing to do.
Wouldn't mind getting our own drinks, but would like a place to drink them.
