In the 69 years I've lived in Newton I've been here twice; once too many. Aside from its single significant claim to be America's 1st Theological School (1807, or so) there is no redeeming feature to hold a travelers attention whatsoever. It is small, in a residential neighborhood and without amenities. If religion is your interest go to the nearby Mary Baker Eddy House or Museum, Boston College, or roam the Lake Street campus of St. John's Seminary, each being more interesting.

The Andover Newton Theological School has a lovely new chapel that we have rented for public speaking events. There are enormous windows and a completely modern facility. Unfortunately, the school is considering moving to New Haven and closing down this location.

If you are in Newton Center and want to walk up a hill to a peaceful setting -- right near the T station-- go for it. Then imagine it without most of the houses on Herrick Road on the left --- several are recent additions (can you figure out which), and when the condos right behind the southern end of the campus were a small "forest". Why did Newton let that happen.

Good place to have kids run around, fly kites, play frisbee, etc. Adults too.

I don't know much (anything) about the school's programs but have walked there often and in many different seasons. The grounds are well-maintained, and the local neighborhood is pleasant. It's up on a hill, so it's a good destination for a walk from nearby Newton Centre.

Andover Newton stands at the radical middle of theological school honoring what is best from both the progressive and evangelical theologies in the Protestant free-church tradition. Its unique location next door to Hebrew College affords an opportunity for interfaith learning fostered through relationships. The faculty have a passion for teaching that inspires students who come from all parts of the U.S. and globe.
