Breakfast was very good but that's it. The course was shocking - several temporary greens in mid June (!) which themselves were worse than those at my own club in mid winter. Fairways badly needed cutting and the rough was ridiculous - 2-4 feet high and impossible to find a ball let alone play it. They insisted we play off the yellow tees which meant a 5000 yd track. It was very cheap and I can see why, but not in the least bit enjoyable. We are a golf society who've played 40+ courses over 20 years - this was far and away the worst.

The hotel facilities and food are excellent.

The golf course is hopeless. It's a micky mouse 5000 yards par 66 cobbled together from what remains of a decent track. It had 4 temporary greens. In June!

As a spa break I'm sure it's a lovely place. As a golf break I'm sorry to say the course is sub-standard and not worth visiting.

Individually and collectively we have been visiting Owston Hall for over 20 years for a golfing weekend. The course has always been challenging, however over the past 12 months due to issues outside of the owners control, has needed to be altered. This will make the course better than in recent years. Our visit a couple of weeks ago was only an overnight stay with one round of golf. The course is shortened the rough needed to be cut down, however is still a test of golf. The main reason we visit as regular as we do is mostly down to the staff. Jamie and his team work hard to make you feel very welcome. The staff are all long serving, genuinely helpful and very accommodating. The food is always excellent with many choices. Defiantly worth a visit for golf or leisure. Over the next few months when the course is completed we will most certainly be visiting again.

We’ve just returned from a last-minute break at Owston Hall Hotel and this definitely won’t be our only visit. From the minute we arrived until we checked out we were treated as valued guests. Being ‘Canny Scot’s’ who like a bargain and this deal more that met our expectations. The course although shorter than it was in the past still poses a challenge. At the time of our visit there was quite a bit of wispy rough that claimed a few of my golf balls; my husband on the other hand is a better spotter than me so didn’t have the same problem (the green keepers were cutting the rough during our second round much to my delight). Some of the greens still needed some attention but this is due the damage done by vandals a year or so ago, those not damaged are in good condition. The course, although not championship standard as yet, is in great shape and will continue to improve given the dedication of the head green keeper and entire team.
We had a couple of detours on our way to the hotel as our sat-nav sent us up the lane to the church directly behind the hotel. After a multi-point turn on a narrow lane we then took the next right anddrove past a sign with two flags and a bed; there was no indication that this was directing us to Owston Hall Hotel so had to do another about turn in the village, come back and take a chance that this was the route. Improved signage would help.
We had a long drive so arrived after the allotted 11:00-13:00 tee times, this was not a problem the Pro was very helpful and rearranged our tee time. At the end of our round we had dinner from the set menu. There was plenty of choice and the food was excellent as was the breakfast the following morning. There was also an excellent choice of gin and beer including real ales so two happy, but tired, campers who were all set for another round the following day.
The hotel’s spa, gym and pool are excellent making this a great venue for golfers and non-golfers alike. We have already recommended Owston Hall Hotel to friends, we enjoyed our golf, the food, ambience and the hotel’s facilities. We hope you do too.
