On our way (on 146) to Woonsocket yesterday, we decided to leave the highway, and investigate some of the beautiful New England backroads. Traveling through the town of Sutton, we chanced upon this studio/shop, and stopped to have a look. From the outside, it just looks like a storefront, but inside, it's a very large space, comprised of an art studio, a Museum, and a retail store.
The Museum holds the many, many antique chocolate molds (also, some ice cream molds) to make the figures at Vaillancourt. Decades ago, these molds made chocolate Santas, snowmen, bunnies, etc. Now, they make chalkware figurines. One can tour the studio and see the process from beginning to end. Artists are there, carefully painting and detailing the outside of the molded chalkware. Really fascinating to see. The finished products are beautiful.
We thought this would be a very short stop, but it proved to be otherwise. If you are in the area, it is a "must visit".
