Owner description: Vaillancourt Folk Art, based in Sutton, Massachusetts, is considered one of the last "Made in America" Christmas studios. Founded in 1984, Vaillancourt chalkware is cast from vintage moulds and hand-painted with the same attention to quality and detail given to the fine arts. Available nationally—from department stores and museum gift shops to small mom and pop shoppes and catalogs—the experience of the studio, gallery, and museum is second to none. Vaillancourt Folk Art operates with one goal in mind: starting your family tradition by creating that special gift that will be handed down throughout generations.

On our way (on 146) to Woonsocket yesterday, we decided to leave the highway, and investigate some of the beautiful New England backroads. Traveling through the town of Sutton, we chanced upon this studio/shop, and stopped to have a look. From the outside, it just looks like a storefront, but inside, it's a very large space, comprised of an art studio, a Museum, and a retail store.

The Museum holds the many, many antique chocolate molds (also, some ice cream molds) to make the figures at Vaillancourt. Decades ago, these molds made chocolate Santas, snowmen, bunnies, etc. Now, they make chalkware figurines. One can tour the studio and see the process from beginning to end. Artists are there, carefully painting and detailing the outside of the molded chalkware. Really fascinating to see. The finished products are beautiful.

We thought this would be a very short stop, but it proved to be otherwise. If you are in the area, it is a "must visit".

This shop is amazing. It's beautifully decorated in the Christmas spirit and packed with unique and artful decorations for Christmas. Their own handcrafted and painted plaster figures are beautifully done and make us think of Christmas long past.
If you appreciate handcrafted art and looking for unique things for your home, or others, at Christmas...Vaillancourt will absolutely not disappoint.

Vaillancourt's paint beautiful plaster chalkware figures made from chocolate molds. They have a wonderful display of past works and you can view the artists painting new ones. They have other delicate works of art for sale and the decorations are always changing with the season. I love the weekend when Charles Dicken's great great grandson does a one man performance, of a "Christmas Carol" in the adjoining theater. It is also a great place to visit at the Holidays either by car or Sutton's "Chain of Lights" Christmas Trolley!

Vaillancourt FA has always stuck to high standards of craftsmanship with everything they make. Tis is one place where you must take your time in order to absorb all the amazing things they make at the studio which is part of the store. Each item they make is hand painted, I love shopping here for special gifts that are always treasured.

At first glance, the location may seem out of the way but I'm here to tell you: if you're a fan of handmade arts, crafts, history or in search of the holiday spirit, Vaillancourt Folk Art should be the centerpiece of your next day trip excursion. Equal parts showroom, museum and artist studio you'll leave with a deep respect for the creativity and skill that goes into creating their chalkware figures (and perhaps a few of their heirloom quality pieces as well).
