On an island where there are no national chains (save a supermarket and a DQ) Black Dog is sort of chainy with a slew of establishments on a compound by the pier. Clothing shop, Sit-down with clothing, and cafe with clothing, & more. Reviews touted BD's chowder as one of the best so we went to sample it at the cafe (coffee, breakfast fare, snacks, soups and s'wiches). We ordered a cup and a bowl at around 1.05 pm. Figured someone has to open a cauldron and ladle it in the bowls and we should be on our way soon. 1.15 and no soup so I inquired with the listless cashier (bored college student on a summer job). It was being heated! 1.22 op and after a second reminder she hands us our food. Zounds, the soup is COLD and the containers have plenty of spare volume available. I return to the counter and without any contrition or apology, the cashier takes it and asks someone to microwave it. This is a premium joint on MV!!!!! 1.28 pm we finally begin digging in. In the meantime we saw other patrons who ordered sandwiches after us already chowing down. By the way, there was also chili on the menu and that cauldron seemed to be letting off steam. Why on earth the chowder was not ready-to-serve hot, I can't fathom. The soup itself was fine - nothing to write a postcard about. Couldn't understand why so many wanted food with their BD hats. And, she didn't give a receipt. Next time, I'll just browse the clothing.

Ordered a vegan dish, the portions were huge but was bland. The ambience is nice, service is good. Worth a visit for the ambience especially if you get a table near a sea facing window!

Trying not to be harsh, BUT, this is a tourist trap charging what the traffic will bear. Firstly, no drinks without food-a town bylaw. This raises the $. Second, grey goose is not served, and we were not the only patrons requesting, by far. Third, food was hit or miss; some very good, some less than average, some prepared not as described. The service was pretty good, spotty, expected in a summer town, we did not short the tip. It is by the water, so that's a plus.

I know this review goes somewhat contrary to the tide, but we live in a destination town and know what to expect. If you want to go for the experience (like us), fine, no harm, but the place is somewhat going on it's reputation and there is no excuse for missing premium brands.

Enjoy the Vineyard, one and done for the Black Dog. $200 for 4 people, one drink a piece, no apps. If this is in your range - go for it!
