Hotchkiss Mobiles Studio is a most incredible kinetic art shop. If you visiting in the area you should make this place one of your stops. You won't be disappointed.
As you approach the store the lawn is littered with large imaginative works of art that twist and turn in the wind. I really like the large metal pieces constructed from simple shapes on the lawn and how they move. My wife preferred the pieces made with small colorful circles that spin in one direction around and around in the up and down direction while the shaft they are connected to and twist and turn with the wind left and right.
Once inside the store, you find the ceiling is a filled with moving art work of all shapes, colors and sizes. The floor and windows are also filled with great pieces. As a customer you are free to roam into his workshop in the back room of the store. This part of the store is unfinished but there are many more pieces on display. You can also see some examples of Hotchkiss‘s work at the museum store in the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield and Williams College Museum of Art at Williams College in Williamstown.
Once at Hotchkiss Mobiles you can also visit the other charming shops of West Stockbridge nearby. Next to Hotchkiss on Moscow Road is the entrance to a new attraction to West Stockbridge – the Turn Park Art Space. Turn Park is a marble quarry turned into a Russian themed sculpture garden with scenic trails and overviews of the region. We learned about it from a local merchant while visiting Hotchkiss. It does not appear to be widely advertised. But the merchant said it was lovely and encouraged us to visit it. Unfortunately we had other plans and had to leave town, but while visiting Hotchkiss you may want to check it out. From its website there is a suggested fee of $15 for general admission. So entry is by donation.
