Stayed as a couple in a king room, booked through hotels.com. In mid summer, paid $107/night weekend (includes tax) - unheard of on the cape. Absolutely no frills room, very small, consisted of king size bed with a wimpy mattress and three pillows, one wall-mounted night stand/shelf with telephone, dresser with 4 drawers and mirror and on top of it: microwave, mini-fridge and tv (no dvd player). Closet with no hangers. Small round table and two oversized, very comfortable chairs. Bathroom was a standard toilet/sink/tub-shower, with an old (but large) mirror.
We were greeted at the front desk by Kathy who was very friendly and helpful. She gave us pointers for breakfast and dinner, even though we had been to the area once a few months earlier - we like hearing other opinions. She explained the charges and gave us our key.
Upon entering the room, I was prepared for anything, based on reviews and other things I heard about this place. The air conditioner was on, and there was a funky smell right away. I immediately opened the window facing the front entrance (no small feat there), and attempted to open the opposite window in the rear, but the hand crank had been removed, so it wasn't possible (too bad, because this window would have been the more secure one to leave open). I eventually figured out that the odor was coming from the bathroom - a sort of mildewy/sewer odor that is common in places with high humidity and poor ventilation. I turned on the exhaust fan in the bathroom and shut the door, and it seemed to take care of the smell for us.
I stripped the bedspread off the bed (standard practice for me at just about any hotel) and checked the sheets and pillowcases. All appeared to be fresh although one pillowcase had a small bloodstain on it, and I retrieved a few new pillowcases from the front desk, along with bars of soap since there were none in the bathroom.
All in all, the place was clean, fairly quiet and a great value. I would stay here again, but would be prepared for a few things a little better, and also get a balcony room next time, as the noise from rooms above carried too easily.
PROS:
Location is convenient, price, simplicity, friendly staff, plenty of hot water and towels, daily maid service (replenished all used towels daily), comfy chairs
CONS:
No hair dryer, coffee maker, shampoos, extra pillows. Wifi was spotty at times. Older mattress was a bit uncomfortable. Shower head needs replacing/updating (not a great spray), and tub drained very slowly during showers. Not enough chairs for everyone to have one outside their room.
