We were a group of four staying January 7-21,2018. Pictures do not do this place justice. It’s in a quiet neighbourhood with friendly neighbours. We met Gertie the tripod agouti who lives with the Lovetts down the street and bought their book about Gertie for my young nieces.
The house is well laid out with the main living areas open to the most gorgeous view you can imagine. As soon as the sun sets the tree frogs start their serenade. The pool is gorgeous and the ideal temperature. The house is ideally situated for prime sunset viewing. We entertained ourselves feeding the iguanas our vegetable scraps . We often saw an agouti on the lawn munching on fallen flower petals. Pelicans fly by to fish in Isles Bay.
It’s hard to leave this house to explore the island but we did drag ourselves away to explore the exclusion zone with Sunny Lea. We visited a few beaches-Woodlands is beautiful! Hiked a few nature trails, went for Saturday waffle breakfast at Hillside Cafe.
Mr Gage who supplied our rental car and Yvette the property manager met us at the ferry dock and accompanied us to the house. We were pleasantly surprised by the two bottles of wine, beer, mixer, breakfast food as well as a delicious lasagna and mixed salad for our supper.
The people of Montserrat were friendly and helpful. Rams the nearby grocery has a fair selection and there are often people selling fruit and veggies across the street. We met someone who will deliver veggies to the house- his name is Kelvin- we left his # on the cell phone. There is also a# for someone who delivers chicken and fresh eggs. If fresh ground pepper is important in your life bring your own pepper corns! You can only find ground pepper on Montserrat.
The housekeeper Josephine comes twice a week and does a wonderful job. We ran into a problem one Friday at 6 pm when we ran out of hot water and couldn’t get the gas stove to light. Yvette the property manager was there within half an hour with an electrician! When they determined the problem was an empty propane gas cylinder the gas man was there with a new tank pronto!
Great house on a cliff overlooking the ocean and Isles Bay. Close to Hank's Beach Bar, two grocery stores, and the Volcano Observatory. My wife and two teenage kids enjoyed Avalon for the week of Thanksgiving. The house is well appointed and the pool is wonderful. Tons of iguanas and chickens in the yard provided a good deal of fun for all. The lack of A/C in the bedrooms was a bit of an issue as the tradewinds were not really blowing during the week and that made it a bit warm in the bedrooms.
Wifi signal was solid in most places and there were no reliability issues during the week. It only took a week for us to figure it out - "Avalon" is "No Lava" backwards!!
This is a beautiful cliff-house in Old Town. The views are spectacular! My husband and I stayed March 26-April 2, 2017. Owner Kate, was quick to respond to emails leading up to our reservation and the property manager checked in on us during our stay. The housekeeper is there twice/wk as is the pool man, George (George is a hoot!) The house has no air conditioning but has ceiling fans in all rooms (note-best to keep the house closed during the day and then open windows at night). Lots of iguanas, roosters and chickens roaming around the property and they will be sure to wake you at the first light. This is a great house if you want to get away and disconnect if you choose to (the house does have wi-fi). My husband and I had a few discussions as to what it would take to live on Montserrat and buy a house like Avalon. Thank you John and Kate!
