We are Northern Michigan locals who love the wide range of dining options in the area between Traverse City, Boyne City, Bellaire, Charlevoix, Elk Rapids, Sutton's Bay and more. But one of our favorites for amazing homemade food is Shirley's in the Woods located in Kalkaska. It's a very small quaint restaurant so I almost hate to let the secret out. Shirley makes mouthwatering breakfasts (you can get them at any time) with the very best tasting omelets, pancakes, french toast and her bread (several options), yummy, is freshly made each day by Shirley. She has some specialty sandwiches that are more than delicious. I love her House Salad, it has so many good things in it and I never get tired of it. Shirley has some great dinner entrees, too. All of her portions are very generous. All her food is tasty and fresh. Did I mention that she makes amazing pies, too? She doesn't have a liquor license if that is important to you. Other than that, this is a great little restaurant that we love to support! Yea, Shirley!

While my son and I were in the area for a canoe trip we asked a local for a recommendation for a place to eat. He strongly recommended Shirley's.

We arrived about 5 and found a small nondescript restaurant in the middle of nowhere along M-72 between Kalkaska and Grayling.

The food is delicious with large servings. All bread and pies are homemade.

The soda is their own brand and does not include a caffeine free diet option.

The next time we are through the area we will certainly return for a second helping.

We were headed home after a weekend in "up north" Michigan, and had decided to avoid the freeway for a more stress-free journey. Our GPS was taking us up and down and all around the northern "tip of the Mitt" until we were entirely disoriented, and we also found ourselves getting really, really hungry. At one point we stopped at a little bakery on the outskirts of Kalkaska and asked the proprietor where we could get a full meal. "Oh, you've got to go to Shirley's in the Woods," we were told. "The food is great. Tell them I sent you."

So we went a couple of miles down the two-lane highway indicated and saw the restaurant. Hmmm. Looked like a typical rural diner; probably the same boring menu.

We were so wrong...SO wrong. Shirley's menu, in addition to burgers and other diner favorites, has an incredible selection of sandwiches, including rotating seasonal specials...using not only fresh, minimally processed ingredients and homemade breads but really inventive flavor combinations that would be the envy of any big-city food truck. A Pink Lady salmon sandwich with the zing of sriracha sauce? An Applejack turkey sandwich enhanced with pepperjack cheese, apple butter and horseradish honey-mustard? Oh, yeah.

We thoroughly enjoyed our "linner" here. Sadly, we had no room for the huge, dripping-with-goodness deep-dish cherry lattice pie we saw cooling on a kitchen shelf, but we have no doubt that it was just as delicious as the main-course items on Shirley's menu. This was actually one of the best meals we had all weekend, even after staying in the Petoskey-Charlevoix area.

The namesake Shirley also has a Shirley's restaurant in nearby Mancelona, with the same menu. And you can see her cooking videos on YouTube -- just do a search.

We wish -- o how we wish -- that the small-town restaurants in our own part of Michigan would realize that they can serve food just as fresh and creative.
