Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Nowhere else does such a rare and exceptional collection of Mackinac-related art and photography come together to tell Mackinac’s story. In complement to the natural beauty of Mackinac Island, The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum allows visitors to experience fine and decorative arts inspired by Mackinac through the ages. One of the most diverse art museums in the region, the museum’s collection offers no shortage of beauty and history – from hand-beaded Native American garments and 17th and 18th-century maps of the Great Lakes, to one-of-a-kind pieces from the height of Mackinac Island’s Victorian era. Original photographs from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century present the beauty of Mackinac as captured by the camera’s eye. Featured are the works of William H. Gardiner, including dozens of his famed early-twentieth century hand-tinted views. This is Mackinac. The art museum is closed for the 2018 season, and will re-open May 2, 2019.

The Manoogian's have collected a wide variety of fine and decorative arts and have them on display at this museum. The building itself has been used for many purposes but it was restored and converted to house the Manoogian collection. Most of the pieces are related in some way to Mackinac Island. There is a fee to enter but if you buy a ticket for Fort Mackinac, entry to the museum is included.

Thank you for taking the time to review and for visiting. The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum is named in honor of the Manoogian's thanks to a generous gift to help create the museum within an existing structure. The majority of the items within the museum are the property of Mackinac State Historic Parks, with six pieces on loan from the Manoogian's private collection.

We had never been here before, but we received a free admission from the Grand Hotel. It was very interesting. The art work is exceptional, and some have interactive narratives. Some of the art depicts what the island looked like back in the 1600 and 1700's. Upstairs, you will see maps of Michigan as depicted by map makers back in the early days. It's very interesting to see how they thought Michigan and the great lakes looked. This is also in a historical building which housed slaves.

Thank you for taking the time to review, and we're glad you enjoyed our exhibits and galleries within the museum. However, looking through historic records, no slaves ever lived in or were kept in this facility. It served as an administration building for the federal government.

Again, thank you for taking the time to review, and please do not hesitate to contact us with any additional questions or comments about The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum.

If you happen to stay overnight at select hotels ( Bay View Bed and Breakfast ) on the island, your admission is free. My wife and I happily put our wallet away and enjoyed the museum. Photos and pictures from prominent events were on display. A large mural on the second floor caught my eye of a group of entertainers from 1905 while they posed on top of Arch Rock.

Paintings and drawings from 1600s-1700s to contemporary art, lots to see in an historic building. Very nicely curated and arranged with sufficient explanation with each exhibit that a guide isn't necessary. Admission price is included with stays at certain hotels.
