Description: For 37 years, Cawthorne's Village Inn has been a favorite Mackinac Island destination of locals and tourists alike. In fact, it has consistently been voted one of northern Michigans best restaurants! A half block off Main Street, on Hoban Street and straight up from Shepler's Ferry Dock, sits “the VI,” where summer visitors can dine on the outdoor patio and watch a passing parade of horses, carriages, bikes and walkers. Originally opened as the Village Inn in 1981, diners enter below a hanging sign announcing its house specialty, Planked Whitefish, which has garnered international acclaim. We also feature other Great Lakes fish, fresh from waters in and near the straits of Mackinac. Inside, enjoy your favorite sporting event on the indoor televisions and take your chance at Keno and pull tabs. You can also enjoy live musical entertainment on select evenings and seasonal bar specials.

The service was great. Had salad & others had soup. All very good and just right for a light lunch. Sat outdoors so we watched all the traffic of the horses and bikes, as folks staying on the island went about their business without cars.

We often eat at the Village Inn when we visit Mackinac Island. For a few years, the restaurant was under Grand Hotel management. If anyone is familiar with the Grand Hotel, you know everything they touch is very classy and fine. Well, I asked a server if that arrangement had ended and why. He said it was just the decision of the owners to end it. The result? A subtle change. The food was still very good, but lacked a certain panache. The servers - a little more ordinary. The general ambience - about the same, but the place was not quite immaculate, as it was when under Grand Hotel management. I'm not trying to be a snob - just want to try to explain the subtle change.

Disembarked from Sheplers Ferry and walked up to Cawthornes for lunch. Found table on the front porch and watched the horse taxis go by as we enjoyed a whitefish sandwich and cider ale. Friendly service by Lisa and reasonable price.

Hungry on the night of our arrival, we found good food, good value and wonderful staff who stopped to check on us often. The waitress chatted just enough to share good hints and make us welcome, even bringing small dishes of things to taste.

We were looking for the best whitefish on the island. We found it at the Village Inn. Not only was the planked whitefish excellently prepared; it was generously portioned. Our bartender shared with us that many diners split the entrée and that's what we decided to do. Paired with French onion soup it was a good decision. Our waiter Jeffrey H. was exceptional.
