“Attitude Problem--staff, owners, and chef”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2010

Though the village of Lapoutroie is adorable, this hotel was quite disappointing. The dressed-in-Alsatian garb staff were frosty to arrogant--the sommelier was a real disaster, patronizing as hell to English-speakers, and the owners were distant, unwelcoming and brusque with non-French speaking guests. Both of us (English) speak perfect French, but the precious service really got up our noses, and the rooms were adequately comfortable, but dreadfully decorated and noisy (cheap parquet floors meant we head every step our neighbor made). The vaunted food here was just a shade better than average, too, including a coq au Riesling that had obviously been reheated many times. Breakfast ordinary, too, with indifferent industrial yogurt (and this in the middle of the country) and awful coffee. All told, this place certainly doesn't deserve three-stars and the staff sorely needs training in the arts of hospitality.

We travel from England to Italy and back every summer and for many years have travelled via Alsace just to stay at The Faude. The rooms are simple but comfortable and the welcome is always charming. However, what makes it special for us is the wonderful food. The hors d'oeuvres and crudites are the best we have ever tasted anywhere and we are serious 'foodies'. At a time when French restaurant food standards are falling by comparison with the best that Britain has to offer, The Faude maintains its standards. We prefer the menu du terroir to the gastonomique - it is certainly worth the journey, even if you then have to drive across the dullest parts of Northern France to reach the Channel ports.

We made a little stay there of one night. We also got dinner at their restaurant.

All dishes are approximatly sa me price (25 euros), and desserts 10 euros. It's worth it. He uses traditionnal french products with a little touch of originality. Wine menu is simply fantastic, due almost to hundreds of differents choices in Alsace wines.

Service is efficient and kind.

We slept at the hotel. Our room was 81 euros (which I find maybe a little expensive for it). Room was a little bit little, but as we stayed only one night and only had little luggages it did not disturb us . Decoration was quite "special", you like or you hate, with colors orange and green.

Bathroom was very large (nearly as large as the room) and clean.

At night, the hotel is very quiet. You hear no noyse coming from inside or from outside. That is to me a very very important thing in a hotel !

Le Faude is a comfortable, family owned hotel up the road from Kayserberg in the Vosges Mountains of Alsace where we have stayed multiple times. In addition to the comfortable, large rooms there are two excellent restaurants, a superb modern French one (Faude Gourmet) and a lower priced one focused on regional specialties. The wine list is outstanding and has won French wine industry awards, so it's a great place to sample a variety of excellent Alsatian (and other French) wines.

In addition the property has a pool (warning -- usually quite chilly), a lovely garden and outdoor eating patio, and is right at the foot of some great hiking trails. Chantal and Thierry Baldinger are terrific and offer a warm welcome. We haven't experienced these, but they also offer the occasional cooking class/ wine tasting sessions each spring.

  • Liked — Having two very good restaurants right there in the same facility; nearness to hiking, wine road, Colmar
  • Disliked — Nothing
