As residents of New Buffalo (yes, locals do eat here), Bentwood Tavern is our go-to restaurant for a great meal with fresh offerings and awesome service. As other reviewers have mentioned, some items on the menu run in the high-$20 range, but most are very reasonably priced, like the best fish and chips on the planet (2 huge pieces of panko-crusted cod with delicious cole slaw and handcut fries) for $15, the out-of-this world tuna and avocado tartare appetizer ($13), and fabulous shrimp tempura appetizer ($10). A giant Angus burger is $10 and the flatbread pizza runs $12-$13. All are very well priced and competitive, if not less expensive, than most restaurants in town. Bentwood always has a specials menu that is incredibly creative. Last night, I had the whitefish, which was fresh and perfectly prepared. My husband had the spaghettini special and loved it. Chef Jenny and her team are always willing to prepare food the way the customer wants it. There is nothing premade here.
The martinis are always perfect. My husband is a craft beer lover and Bentwood always has a great selection on tap.
The service we receive really depends on the server. We always get great service from Kym, Val, and Debbie.
Bentwood is also very supportive of the local community and holds a monthly giveback dinner during the off-season (which was the reason for our visit last night), where they donate 50% of all food and beverage sales to a different local non-profit organization each month.
If you have not tried Bentwood Tavern, I recommend that you put in on your Bucket List. In our experience, the best days to visit for a quiet, easy paced dining experience in the tourist off-season are Sunday through Thursday, except for Sushi Night when the place is packed and the atmosphere is "very energetic," as some would describe it. We love the sushi but the noise level is too intense for us. Thank goodness for carry out.
