Enjoy a trip around the island in your vehicle to enjoy a few minutes of the trees, wildlife (squirrels, birds, geese, possum, seagulls, etc). Great place to take a stroll, go jogging, even ride a bike along the paved driveway. View the Saginaw River and the skyline of Old Town Saginaw area. Plenty of picnic tables to eat lunch with family and/or friends. Lots of shade trees. Summer time there are concerts and other events held on the island.
This park has four season access and four season interest. Walking the 2/3 mile lap or the half mile or so from bridge to bridge is a nice way to take a break from the day.
There are no historical markers from the lumber days but there is a boulder to the first mass there.
Summer concerts and fireworks are a nice evening addition while fishing and watching the small boats are good day time activities.
A popular ice fishing location during the winter when the ice is deep enough.
Ojibway has been a nice peaceful resort for me just to get away from it all. Clear my thoughts of the days stress & to come up with new ideas for future projects!
It's a large, clean, quiet park for the family and for events. You'll definitely enjoy it when you go there.
Ojibway Island is just a beautiful place to enjoy a relaxing lunch break, a fun family afternoon, or a great location for a big outdoor concert! The island, located in the Saginaw River in the city of Saginaw, is a refreshing oasis in the middle of a dirty city that has seen better days. The city does a good job of keeping the island beautiful and preserving the nature there, while still providing necessary facilities for several large annual events like the Rock the Island Festival and the KCQ Country Music Fest. There's lots of parking on the island, even for events. Plus, it's close to a few other nice attractions like the Saginaw Children's Zoo, Celebration Square Splash Park and Skate Park, and just across the river from downtown.
Okay, now after reading other reviews I just had to put-in my 2centsworth. I am from another large city in Michigan which definitely has the same "concerns" with it's parks and open spaces. And...I love a good park. Sure, in the middle of the day, especially on weekends, and when with a group---you are safe. The setting is actually phenomenal with winding walkways and lovely shade trees. There are large spaces for playing an impromptu kickball game with the kids. There are several spots along the river that look a little more tended, and also would give a nice opportunity to contemplate the river. I can see why this place is (or maybe was) beloved to the community. Any other time, if there is not a concert or large group present, I would be concerned at this park.
I love the concerts, but can tell the place is dressed-up for it. In other words, when all of the concert-goers leave you are truly on your own. The grass will not be mowed, the paths and woods are very secluded. There are no amenities that would attract me. I would rather pee in the weeds (where probably everyone else goes) than even chance checking to see if one of those bathrooms is open. This is not a tourist destination. Beware. I know I am naughty for adding this but I find it interesting in Michigan that we are rich enough to afford so, so much, but can't have better and safer places to enjoy the outdoors for so many who could benefit in our cities! Yes, I can give this place a five on a concert day (thank you WKCQ for making Saginaw look good), but overall I am nervous to give it that kind of spectacular score.
