“Saw the great reviews... pretty big letdown...”
Reviewed 22 January 2012

I was looking for a getaway for my girlfriend and myself, and being somewhat new to the area I went off the reviews posted here. Though parts of the stay were nice, most of it was disappointing.

The room itself was fairly nice, aside from the lights shining at the side of the building which were unable to be covered by the blinds. The hallway noise was pretty bad as well starting around 6 am.

The buffet was great except for an odd smelling shrimp pasta dish that went down and back up over the course of an hour.

The gaming itself was great. Slots were kind and seemed loose at times. The card area seemed pretty lively but available seats could be found pretty easily.

The only part of the trip I really was disappointed by was the pool area. Unless you are a family with younger kids I would not pack anything for the pool. It was a zoo until the "adult-only" hour. We decided to check it out once the adult time started and was grossed out by the 20-30 year old men staring at people in the pool from outside the gated area.

All in all I would suggest this place to someone strictly here to gamble, otherwise if you are coming from the metro area I would head to Danbury.

Room Tip: Try and stay in the tower!

We had a great stay at Black Bear! We stayed in a tower room which is the newer section. The room was very clean and contemporary. The bed had what appeared to be permanently stained sheets. We asked for them to be changed. They sent 3 staff to change the them. The front desk staff were indifferent and not overly friendly. The buffet was fantastic. One of the smaller casino buffets we've experienced, yet still large and quality food.

My husband and I have stayed here several times. Be sure to ask for the newer rooms, or you will be disappointed!
The service has always been great, I love the fact that they have a Starbucks coffee shop for in the morning, and the rooms are spacious and clean.
The only real drawback is the distance you have to walk from the parking ramp to the hotel lobby (have to go through the casino with luggage). I know we could unload by the main entrance, then move our car around to the covered parking, but it seems like every time we check in it is either snowing, pouring rain, or the wind is blowing like crazy, so we take the walk instead.
The casino itself is also very pleasant and not as smoky as many we have played in.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the new rooms - they are well worth it!

We stay at Black Bear every December and April on our way to and from Florida
OUr rooms have always been clean and comfy. If I had any complaint it would be the noise from the hallways and the inconsiderate fellow travellers slamming the doors in the early hours. i usually gamble late and try to close my door as quietly as possible. It is a good buy for the money. However, other casinos we stay at DO give better perks and one gives us a free room every year. The buffet is always good.

Room Tip: Tower rooms are best. those down by the pool are noisy.

Great hotel with nice rooms and a wonderful casino. The staff is always very friendly and willing to help. There is also plenty to do in the area and the hotel is very close to Duluth.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the new tower addition.
