“great week-end getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2011

We stay here 4-6 times a year and it makes for a very relaxing weekend get-away. The rooms are not huge, but laid out well. The bed and bedding is really comfortable. Spend the extra money to get a lake-view room and request the 5th or 6th floor. You will get a great view of the Duluth harbor and the bridge that goes up and down for the big ships that come through. If you get lake-view on the 2nd or 3rd floor you'll get a view of the buildings across the street. Parking is free in the adjacent ramp connected by an indoor skyway. This hotel is on the north end of downtown rather than the more busy, touristy Canal Park area. The shuttle will take you there if you don't want to drive. It's only two blocks from the Fon-Duluth casino which is a funky casino. It's also a only a few blocks to walk north to restaurants like Fitgers and The Pickwick Inn. The downtown area has some interesting characters, but is pretty safe. I wish they could keep a steady staff here as it seems like there are always new people every time we come. Some are very accommodating while others are not so much. The lobby area is nice and the club room is nice. They have improved their evening reception and the breakfast. You will have to pay extra for this-just like anywhere else.

Room Tip: ask for 4,5 or 6 floor for lake-view, otherwise don't bother. rooms 20-30 are the best

Major disappointment heat didn't go past 70 degree. Tv wouldn't work with all lights off. And still waiting for laundry to be delivered. Couldnt arrange a credit card cab in am instead suggested a company which didnt take cards. This hoel confirms why I am a Hilton Diamond and Marriott Gold. Sheratons lack consistency and quality standards. Should have stayed at Hampton. Major disappointment. Set your expectations low.

We checked in for an anniversary stay. Parking is in a public lot and like a "rat maze" to actually get to the lobby. As we awaited the arrival of our son and daughter in law.....we got a phone call stating that someone on the 4th floor was smoking and that they were calling ALL rooms on the 4th floor.......OMG! Like you are in 2nd grade........how DEGRADING! So we decided to walk the 4th floor to see if we could hear other phones ringing in rooms as the ring is quite loud..........we did not hear a ring anywhere! TOTAL LIE ON THE STAFF'S PART! If they thought we were smoking in our room (which WE WERE NOT) come to the room and see for yourself-smoke would not be very easily hidden if someone walked into the room.
Room was not clean.........stains ALL OVER THE CARPET.........dirt and debris on the carpet in the hallways. Room was small for a king bed...........not impressed with the size of the tv either. Overall.........poor hotel and poor stay and poor staff. Got to have a "city view" of the people's apartment right across from us.....DEFINITELY NOT A CITY VIEW!!!!

Room was a suite, and much, much smaller than expected. About three feet between bed and TV/Closet. Carpet had stains all over it. Staff seemed new, were not at all helpful. Overall very bad experience. I would recommend Inn on Lake Superior, or even Holiday Inn. Parking Ramp also very inconveniently located.

Recent business trip to Duluth MN had the pleasure of staying a week, central location walking distance to great resturants, and the lake, did not get to 301 reasturant but heard great things will be back.

Room Tip: Ask for high up room as street noise is a little loud during the day.

We've just returned from our stay. A belated anniversary celebration and there for a friend's wedding. We've stayed at the Holiday and the Radisson before as well; both are shabbby compared to the Sheraton. The beds and super comfy. The staff professional and accomodating. Property was sold out Saturday. We were in still granted a request for a quiet king room. While 540 didn't face the lake, it was away from the elevator and nicely situated with one shared wall. The accomodation was clean. No complaint. Our friends got married at the Inn on Superior Shores and we liked the Sheraton rooms much better. We will return.

We're used to staying in Canal Park but stayed at the Sheraton this time for a conference next door at The Greysolon. The Sheraton is beautiful in an old world charm kind of way. Dark woods and plush furniture in the lobby, plush bedding, wall mounted flatscreen tv leaves room for beautiful armoir and other upsacle furnishings. The bathroon is a real treat - little Fench doors and freestanding sink "table" - feels very luxe. Hot tub and pool are open 24 hours - a big plus to us. We're old enough to consider the hot tub a therapeutic amenity for our creaky bones but don't like to feel under pressure to rush through dinner and drinks or an after dinner walk in order to meet a pool closing deadline. Customer service was great too. Other reviewers mention as a drawback the walk to the parking ramp but we found this no big deal and to be expected in the downtown area of this city built on a hill. We were however surprised and dissappointed that we had to pay $5 for wifi! Even a $40 room on the priaire comes with free wifi these days, so this feels like a rip. The neighborhood is still slighty dicey too, but assuming you're not out there alone in the middle of the night it's not all that bad. We walked to dinner and back at Canal Park - the distance is just enough to make you feel you're being healthful and "green". Overall we found this hotel to be a very lovely and special place to stay and we are likely to return.
