We stayed at Smitty's for only one night because we had already rented a cottage and it wasnt ready until Sat. We called and they were happy to take our reservation. They explained that they fixed meals there and because we were too late to make a reservation, we would have to eat in town. We made reservations for breakfast, met new people, and had a great meal. The fishing for smallmouths was good and the lake was beautiful. It is primitive, but great people and what a fun experience. Would like to go there again to fish.

Ely MN is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. While this is not a place for everyone, if you think it’s a place for you why would you come here and stay in a motel in town? Especially if you can stay on one of the lakes in a fishing cabin for the same price?
Smitty’s is called a resort, but that is a bit grand. The accommodations are Spartan by American standards. Still, the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable and the Schmidts are wonderful people. And you sure can’t beat the location!
So, forget Super 8 and get out where we heard wolves at twilight and loons at night and saw bald eagles gliding over the lake during the day. You can rent a canoe here or even embark for a multi-day canoe trip from their dock. Whatever you choose to do, don’t spend the day shopping in town when you are this close to one of the last really wild places in the north country.
