We were in Waskesiu for three days. We canoed The Hang Heart Lakes, Which was fabulous and Waskesiu Lake west of the Narrows, which was very good. We tried the Waskesui River but it was too shallow and scraped up my homemade canoe quite badly. I wouldn't take advice from the visitor centre very seriously. We also did some excellent hiking. The fall colours were amazing. The restaurant options are limited in fall and fairly pricey but the food very good. We had fabulous weather but that can change very rapidly in the north.
Beautiful place to visit any time of year, but the autumn colours were amazing. There are plenty of nature walks to take, and you won't be swarmed by people while you take advantage of them. Nice, quiet place to visit where sometimes all you can hear is the wind whispering in the treetops.
Every year we go camping in the national park. We have went on nature trails and drives pretty much everywhere. Through out our years we have seen lots of wildlife and experienced lots of different weather patterns. its been fun and joyful.
It has been about 20 years since I last was here. Sure, it has changed, but yet it is still the same.
There are lots of amazing hiking trails, if you like. You can go for a swim, sit on the sandy beach - there is lots of that too.
Very relaxing.
Being from the states we felt we would experience some of the Canadian national treasures. Upon arriving at the park we drove directly to Waskesiu and spent some time there walking through the town and viewing the lake. It was all very quaint and picturesque. After leaving the town and driving around we found that signage or direction to any specific attractions simply didn't exist. The views and drive were beautiful but we're hoping to see more. Couldn't locate any type of map or literature tell us of places to go and see. A bit disappointed but got to see some beautiful countryside.
I recommend this for everyone. Its a wonderful getaway in the Boreal Forest. The Elk roam free, and can bee seen if your lucky enough early in the morning down by the beach water. Lots of awesome hiking trail if that your thing. Or just kick back at the beach and chill for the afternoon. Lots of accommodations provided. With the busy summer months always book ahead of time. We do in late Feb early Mar. Also very good spots for the fisherman in the family as well as one of Canada's best golf courses. The surrounding lake are great for fishing as well. If you are and extreme hiker or paddler. A trek out to Grey Owls Cabin is advised. I remember Bob Hope saying it was one of the most beautiful golf courses he has ever played. This Federal Park is for everyone and I highly recommend it .
