This large National Park was not that interesting to us. We spent one day there, walked a couple of trails. The bog boardwalk trail was nice. We drove outside of the park for several hours to the west entrance to see if we could see any bison. It was a bit rainy, and hot and we did not see any wildlife at all. It was a bit disappointing but we know that it's called wild life for a reason, and the wildlife may or may not be seen! We spent a small amount of time in the park's town of Waskasiu but we are not shoppers, so didn't stay long. It was pretty crowded which you expect in the summer, of course.

We booked early and online through Parks Canada for a camping site in Beaver Glen campground. It was a most-pleasurable ten day camping holiday.

So the national park is awesome, as usual. The beaches are great and the rest of the experience is awesome.

The boat launch is not so much. After the federal government put in a bunch of money to the marina last year (black top, parking, etc) I return this year to find out that the marina lease owner has changed the way you can launch boats!

They have shut down the boat launch by the breakwater and that entire parking lot beside it. They reserve that area now for people that pay to use his slips and docks. So everyone else is forced to go and launch their boat on the opposite side of the marina on the dock's open to the water. Parking is now about a football field away in a from the docks. It is a bit of a logistical nightmare with boats lined up to get in and out.

Not to mention that they hire a guy to sit on a ATV and explain why you cannot use one dock but not help control the mess on the other side.

*sigh*

Might have to drive up to the Narrows to dump the boat now. Less hassle.

PANP exceeded our expectations, Waskasiu townsite very quaint and reminded us of the mountain parks. We stayed in Red Deer campground and what a great location walking distance to virtually everything in town. Lots of nice paths and a great beach area with playground. I can now see why Waskasiu is so popular with families. Mosquitoes we not an issue for us but, on recommendations from a friend, when we booked our site we chose one which was out in an open area and not in the bush. When we went on a hike at the Waskasiu River there were lots of mosquitoes so they were around. All the roads in Red Deer are paved and it was so nice not to have to put up with gravel roads and dust all week. I think PANP is one of the most visitor friendly parks with the best facilities of any national park I have ever visited.
