A relatively new addition to the Oxford landscape, the Chancellor’s House offered a nice stay that left only a couple of suggestions. One, the perfume in the room could be a touch less strong; second, the breakfast (french toast), while good, could have easily been made great and it would have elevated the entire hotel.

Almost a five, I suspect being here during the summer, didn’t help get the team’s best, so only a four, but a solid four.

Dear Mark H,

Our sincere thank you for taking the time to review our hotel positively, and for offering your helpful suggestion on how we can elevate the experience. We have a wonderful team here during the Summer, and though it is smaller in size than the rest of the year, we absolutely are capable of delivering a great breakfast experience. We will lengthen our stride in that area, and will hope to have the chance to welcome you back on your next visit to Oxford.

Sincerely,

Weston Arntsen

Not only is this hotel very elegant and tasteful the service by the staff is second to none...especially the concierge and sales manager, Clifton Odom. Our two room suite with two full baths overlooking a large patio was magnificent. Due to the rainy weather walking to the convenient restaurants on the square was often a problem but the staff was very willing to drop us off and pick us up upon request. They even ran errands for us since our vehicle had been parked by the valet. The bar and restaurant are both beautiful and provided top notch service. The Chancellor's House has the feel of a high end hotel in New York City yet with the charm and hospitality of a small town. Not since staying in a Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas have we been so pampered by a hotel staff. Treat yourselves to a stay!!

Located just a block off Oxford's historic courthouse square, Chancellor's House is a welcome counterpoint to the many mid-market chain lodging options in the area. Indeed, the comfortable pillow-top mattress and sumptuous bathroom were welcome upgrades. It would appear that there are serious aspirations for the property—Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant expects the hotel to be "one of the top properties in the. United States." However, we encountered a number of basic hiccups that might prevent Chancellor's House from achieving this lofty goal. Frighteningly, the entire lobby floor of the building and the elevators smelt strongly of gas for the entirety of our stay. The front desk staff couldn't make change so we could tip for valet parking (required and way overpriced at $25/daily) and it was strange to have to displace the concierge from his desk so we could print our boarding passes in the absence of a business center or computer kiosk. But most problematically our beautiful bathroom still had long, stringy remnants from a previous guest; at least that caused us not to want to linger in the shower, which didn't exactly feature five-star spray. The hotel clearly seeks to serve upmarket Ole Miss parents who require a distinguished local address while visiting the little ones. Despite these missteps and a clear lack of service culture, I expect Chancellor's House to excel in this very specific niche.

Room Tip: Steer clear of rooms overlooking the disused Sonic drive-in next door.

Dear MisterMary,

I am very grateful that you took time to give us and readers an honest assessment of your stay. I would love the opportunity to speak with you verbally to discuss these and any other details outlining where we fell short. As you stated, we have committed to and have been labeled as having the highest level of property, with a culture of guest service at the forefront. Reading that you felt we clearly lacked that is very disheartening for us, but we would love to have that opportunity to learn and make things right.

If you are able to find time to speak, I can be reached at (662) 371-1400 or via email at w.arntsen@chancellorshouse.com. Thank you again for your review.

The place my wife and I planned to stay was unavailable, so at the last minute we booked the Chancellor’s House. The staff from the valet parking through the reception desk to the restaurant were extremely accommodating. Our accommodations were luxurious. Our stay was delightful.
