Description: Prison Brews was opened in 2007 in a part of town that once housed the state penitentiary and is now experiencing residential / commercial re-growth. This has become a popular brewery with wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, etc. It has completely embraced the "prison" kitsch feel with bars between the bar & dining area and pictures of the 1800's penitentiary historical artifact lining the walls. The menu items and beers on tap are also incorporated into the theme. There is a large dining area as well as large outdoor seating on the adjacent patio complete with bocce ball. A unique experience in a growing area of town.

While in town we went to Prison Brews to play bocce ball and have a few beers!! The staff are all very nice! While there we ordered a few appetizers and a cheeseburger. The cheeseburger was excellent along with the fried appetizer platter. The loaded fries were a little lacking. They were supposed to close at 8, but they still had a patio pretty full of customers. They announced last call at 8:15 and waited till basically the crowd was done. Very nice of them to be soooo patient! The bocce ball is a blast. They had light music playing, but, it was hard to hear. You guys should have some acoustic music people out on the weekends!! Their private label beers are awesome as well!! I also love the play on the prison for witty names on their beers! So cute!! We are from Memphis, TN. I would put this restaurant/bar against most in Memphis!! Love our visits!

PROS: great taste, affordable price, great service; close to the Penn; plenty of parking in the back. Cool beer barrel urinals, lol.

CONS: none.

Stopped to sample their brew. It was a very hot day and scattered rain. The bar inside was full so we ventured to the outside bar. We had the place to ourselves with 2 servers. The male bartender offered to teach us bocce ball; we agreed. We played 2 games and had a blast (even though it rained). He brought over umbrellas and a lg fan to keep us cool. I loved the wheat beer served with an orange slice. They also have domestic beer available

We didn’t try the food...but the restaurant was full so I assume it must be good too

We stopped in for lunch prior to our tour of the nearby prison. The decor in the jailhouse theme was fun and the food was very good. The crowd was a mix of tourists and locals which is always a good sign. The house brews were surprisingly good, not the over hopped fair that seems to be the trend these days.

We stopped in a Prison Brews based upon the recommendation of a guide at the MO Penitentiary (now closed) tour. Clever interior with all the booths set within Prison bars like a cell. The restaurant is a micro-brew serving only the beers they brew. I had a Prison Brown (I think?) and it was good. Extensive casual menu. I had a club with onion rings and my wife had a salad and veggie pizza. Both were very tasty. Street parking right in front. Friendly and speedy service. The Manager came by to chat and was very proud of the establishment. Highly recommended.
