Owner description: The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Mo. was built in 1998 and provides free tours or extended Steel Toe Tours. Kansas City employees produce the Sportster®, Dyna®, StreetTM and V-Rod® families of motorcycles, along with select Softail® models, from fabrication and finishing through final assembly to include the liquid-cooled Revolution® and Revolution XTM powertrains for the V-Rod and Street families. The tour center features a series of displays that guide you through the various manufacturing and assembly processes. You'll also have the chance to sit on current production motorcycles and visit the gift shop, which features tour-related souvenirs. Your tour experience begins with an introductory video. Then it's on to the factory floor where you'll witness a wide range of operations from welding, laser-cutting and frame-bending, to polishing and assembly. You'll see fenders and fuel tanks being formed, newly painted frames hanging on the line, and sophisticated robotic welding technology. You'll also see the Revolution® powertrain assembled from crankcase to cylinder heads.

Great guided tour. No sample "hogs" given out, but very modern assembly line.

The entire tour took about an hour when all was said and done. Best of all, it was FREE. My brother is 17 and he really enjoyed himself. You have to be 12 to take the tour, which makes sense, as this is not a dumbed down tour of just the best areas. You are walking the actual factory floor. It is also the only plant that makes both the bikes and powertrain, so you can't see this stuff at even the HD HQ. A lot of love goes into these bikes. I don't ride and I never will but it was really interesting to see.

This was the BEST attraction. We took a tour of the Power Train operations and it completely inspired me. My Goodness! That these people care so much about the product they make that they go through so much to make it perfect... it is amazing! The people working the line building them are the people who ride them and know how they should look and feel. This is the only brand of any motorized vehicle that goes to such care.

It was fun to see how the motorcycles are made. We learned about the engines, learned about painting the parts (some were great colors), and how they are assembled. Also how some parts are made like the gas tanks which was amazing.

Fun, informative tour - don't wear sandals though -- not allowed due to the heavy machinery.
