“Exceeded Expectations!”
Reviewed 10 July 2016

I booked 2 campsites for 4 nights over the Canada Day weekend. I'd never been to the island so didn't know what to expect, but Gordon's Park was PERFECT. Our campsites were only 2 min from showers and bathrooms but felt very secluded and private which is exactly what we wanted. The trails behind the campsites were fun and looking at the stars was incredible. The staff were all very helpful for newcomers like us and very knowledgeable. Next time will definitely visit their Dark Sky Preserve!

Room Tip: Many different types of campsites (including tipi camping) so just ask the owners what kinds of site...

We stayed in a "Bunnie" which is a small basic cabin with two bunk beds and and a fold out full bed. Basic camp style thin mattresses on a board. Not fancy, but clean, dry and reasonably priced. They have a nice little store, and free Wi-Fi and a phone charging area. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Right from the very welcoming check in to the 'never want to leave' goodbye, we loved our stay at Gordon's Park! Not only are the staff friendly beyond belief, the surrounding environment and night sky was beautiful. We stayed over an early May week, so it was a little chilly at night trying to star gaze, however, nothing a sleeping bag can't solve! Besides, my fiance said 'Yes' under the cool night sky! :) The clean stargazing Cabin was perfect for us and had working lamps, plenty of water and a great view. On site hikes were great (we'd recommend bug spray!) and the showers and bathrooms were all clean. We will definitely be back, hopefully to see the progress/completion of the lake restoration! Thanks again!

We went for the Peresids (?) star party in 2015. The owners were very friendly and the star party was fun. There were plenty of telescopes with enthusiastic owners who loved to show them to the curious. Educational and fun. I would go this year if it wasn't for a scheduling conflict. I can't say much about the accommodations as we were just there for the day. It looks well equipped with a pool and mini golf.

We came out this past weekend for the Aurora Borealis weekend and had a great time. It was our first time on Manitoulin Island so it was very helpful to get a map and some information from Paul at the front. We then settled into the dark sky preserve and headed up for the pot luck. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, plus the pot luck was perfect after a long drive. It was cloudy Saturday night so we went to bed early. We took advantage of the beautiful day on Sunday to go hiking around the property and check out a couple of places around the area. Sunday night was so clear and beautiful to see the stars. We got a cool lesson in some constellations and looked through the telescope at some of them. It was so magical to see the night sky like that with no light pollution. We were able to get water, rinse dishes and use the cooking station if needed up at the front so that was a huge plus. The privies were very clean and it sure beats a thunder box.

Though the evening/night was hazy Paul our host for the evening made the best of it, the astronomy presentation was informative, and once outside a lot of time was spent demonstrating star hopping and viewing key stars and other objects in the night sky... he clearly knows his stuff Our plan is to return for the Gordon's Park Perseids Party next year and/or head North this year once again once the temperature drops in hopes we can see the Northern Lights.

I spent the last week at Gordon's Park enjoying their dark sky sanctuary for doing my astronomy. Let me chronicle my entire stay:

- I arrived Tuesday, August 11, 2015 and went to the resort's office. I was greeted immediately by the staff member who apologized for the slight wait while she deal with the previous person. She was professional and gave me detailed instructions on how to find the dark sky preserve

- I was then met by one of the resort's wonderful owners, Rita Gordon who welcomed me to my very first visit and told me right up front if I needed anything to just tell the staff

- I drove to the dark sky area and proceeded to set up my site - the area is high enough and there is indeed a view of the night sky from horizon to horizon

- Tuesday night, I enjoyed the night sky green laser tour, where at least a dozen people came for the presentation

- viewing the Perseid meteor shower and staying for the Manitoulin Star Party was my best experience ever as this dark sky site is unparalleled for its care in ensuring that there is no ambient white light after sunset

- the eco vault toilets were maintained in a clean state at all times; the eco shower was clean and as I brought my own shower bag from Canadian Tire, showers cost absolutely nothing (less than $10 gets you one you can use on every camping trip)

- staff patrolled the site regularly and very always available to assist or recommend how one could improve things. The owners and staff are very sensitive to their guest's needs. If a guest makes a suggestion, they are receptive and will work to implement anything that is within their abilities. (As a small operation, they have a limited budget but have ensured that guests have free Wi-Fi and provide everything to ensure comfort - remember if you visit that Gordon's Park is an eco resort - they are maintaining a very high standard in ensuring that recycling is possible and that there is minimal impact on the environment.)

- Gordon's Park provides a central barbecue for the guests so that they can enjoy hot food or heat water for their showers.

- the wine and cheese get together is a great socializing opportunity to meet your fellow guests of the resort

- I found the facilities excellent for the type of park - I have done rugged camping before in the north country of Canada; the extra amenities provided by Gordon's Park make the camping so much more enjoyable

- now to the astronomy: the park provides the darkest skies I have found in many, many years - they boast of dark skies with a limiting magnitude of 7.5+ - it was indeed just like that but better

- never be put off by the "so-called" weather forecast - I checked daily and every forecast was for mediocre skies - of my six nights there five were clear and despite humidity, viewing with my telescope was exceptional. I was able to find every single object I sought and was able to share with quite a number of other very advanced amateur astronomers and astrophotographers

Room Tip: Get close to nature on the hiking trails!
