Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Museum of Westward Expansion closed, pending installation of all new museum exhibits. As of March 2, 2015, entry-only ticket or tram ticket required to enter Arch. The nation's tallest monument at 630 feet, the Gateway Arch has beckoned visitors since June 1967. The Gateway Arch commemorates Thomas Jefferson and the role St. Louis played in the westward expansion of the United States. A visit to St. Louis isn't complete without standing at the Arch's base and playing professional photographer, but the view from the outside is only half of the experience. Attractions within the Arch include the Journey to the Top (the last tram leaves one hour before closing); educational programs (will be housed at the Old Courthouse); award-winning documentary movie, Monument to the Dream; and a gift shop. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Note: the address shown is for the Old Courthouse which is acting as the Gateway Arch Ticketing and Visitor Center throughout construction. Pedestrian entrance to the Arch Grounds is at Walnut Street at Memorial Drive or via the Grand Staircase from the riverfront.

“Fun experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2013

The first thing I want to mention is parking. I bought our tickets online, and it said that it includes free parking at the garage. I got a ticket to enter the garage, and I wasn't sure how to get the free parking. All you have to do is show your online confirmation page at the booth when you leave the garage. It was nice getting free parking!
They recommend getting to the Arch early to get through security, and even though there was a line it moved quickly. The visitors building is a nice clean place, and they have large signs so you can easily see how many minutes until they are accepting people for your tram time. They have an old fashioned general store, and another store with Arch and other items to purchase.
You do spend several minutes in line waiting for your tram to board, but I thought it seemed well organized and it went fairly quickly. The ride is about 4 minutes up and 3 minutes down, and you can stay at the top as long as you want. The whole thing did take about an hour with the time we spent in line and at the top.
The trams fit five people, but they are small so people might have an issue if they are clausterphobic. I don't like heights, but even though the Arch is really tall it is a small enclosed space at the top so it isn't scary at all.

“The Must Do Site In St Louis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2013

This should definitely be everyone's number one site to see in St. Louis. We spent the whole day here. Make sure to buy your tickets to go to the top on line before coming and come early. I only had to go thru the security line and then the will call line for my tickets. The regular ticket line was over an hr wait and I just walked up with no wait for mine. The museum is very interesting and so are the movies. We loved going up to the top and looking out the windows. Plus the capsule ride was very unique. This is definitely a once in a life time experience so i am so glad that my daughter and I were able to do it. We also did the boat ride which was not worth it - very boring and unfortunately not much to look at except industrial building.

“Spectacular view from the tallest US monument!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2013

I just returned from three hours at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO. The iconic arch is the tallest monument in the USA, reaching 630 feet. It is the center piece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial located in downtown St. Louis on the Missouri side (west side) of the Mississippi River. At the top of the arch you can see for 30 miles to the west and east on a clear day. The cost for the trip in small gondolas holding five people each is $10 for adults and $5 for children (3-15). The experience is safe and not scary, except for those who are claustrophobic. Hint -- the guides told me that weekdays are the least crowded. The South entrance is most always the least crowded, due to the fact that the major paths coming to the arch are from the parking lot in the northern end. It is worth the short cut across the grass to the South entrance - I heard several cries of "Run, Forest, Run!" as a group ran across the lawn! Don't miss the excellent 45 minute award-winning documentary film chronicling the Lewis & Clark Expedition of 1804-1806 projected on a four-story high screen. It is well worth the $4.00 entrance fee, which by the way must be purchased at the same time you purchase a ticket for the "Journey to the Top." The film begins each hour on the half hour. On busy summer weekend days, plan to spend 3 hours to see everything, as I did. I would think that when the crowds are less on weekdays and/or in the winter that you should be able see it all in 2 hours. It is the wait for your time to ascent to the top that takes the bulk of the time. There is also an excellent museum you enter at no cost while you wait for your appointed time to ascent the arch or view the film. A great family visit!

“Gotta see”

Of course, you always have to visit the arch in St. Louis. Can't go there without a visit. But be prepared during the summer for very, very long line to get into the visitor center.

“Great view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2013

The museum in the base is wonderful as well, about Missouri being the Gateway to the West. We were able to see a living American Bald Eagle up close. Don't miss the arch if you're traveling to St. Louis!
