We took two separate day tours into Yellowstone national park during the 2012 winter season using Buffalo Bus Company and had a fantastic time both days. Our first tour was a private tour through the canyon district with 'Old Tim' as our guide. A private excursion is the way to go if you have a group of like-minded people to enjoy it with. Tim was a fabulous guide with tons of stories and information to share. You won't have a bad day headed out with this guy. =]

We also took a group tour on a separate day to see Old Faithful and the surrounding geyser basins . I was worried the 'group' feel (22 of us versus the 4 on the private tour) would take away from the experience but we ended up having a blast. Scott was our guide on this trip, also fantastic, and did a great job story telling and moving the group around. A tip to make a group tour feel more 1 on 1 is to sit in the front of the bus. You'll have easier access to your guide to ask questions and you are also the first one off (and last on back on) the bus at each stop maximizing your time. I still would have preferred more time to hike around the geyser basin at old faithful (and a private tour would likely have allowed for this) but all in all, we were not at all disappointed. I highly recommend this company to host your tour into Yellowstone.

My teenage son and I decided to take a break from skiing Big Sky and went for a day on a snowcoach tour in the Yellowstone NP. Buffalo Bus has a pickup /drop off from the Big Sky area, and everything was very well coordinated. (Pick up came about 30 min late from the designated time, but no worries, Snowcoach will wait for you.) Our guide was Brad, who is a bird specialist, and seemed to know everything about YNP! He could point out every little things you would not otherwise notice and tell you great stories about them. We were also lucky as the day was perfect with new blanket of snow and plenty of sunshine. Could not have been more beautiful! Among the lots of wild lifes we saw were a couple of bald eagles perching on a branch; a kid (?) bison getting weak in the snow (Brad said many do not survive the winter) ; a swan left alone after his herd had left for colder weather.. and a small avalanche coming down from the cliff (not on us!)
Things to note: Temperature control is difficult in the bus. In our case it was very warm even with small windows open. So dress in layers - Bathroom every 2 hours. There could be long lines especially for ladies. Do not drink too much - We had a lunch at a fast food joint at the Old Faith. Not particularly great, but warms you up while waiting for the geyser to shoot up. Good shoes are a must, binoculars and camera with zoom lens highly recommended!

We went to the geyser basin with Brad during an epic snowstorm. Safety was always primary; comfort and overall experience for each member of the group was carefully considered. The small items of interest were pointed out, not just the larger, more noticeable features. Congrats' to Buffalo Bus Touring Company, to Cynthia Knapp who orchestrated the outing, and to Brad for leading us. we'll be back!! The Smith's from Florida.

We are very happy that you enjoyed your Yellowstone tour with Buffalo Bus Touring Company in West Yellowstone! We are very priviledged to have guides like Doug interpreting Yellowstone through their eyes, for the visitors that come to our area. We decided on a snowcoach tour as our introduction to a 4-day stay in the West Yellowstone area and were pleased with it, especially because we encountered a snowstorm mid-day. Our guide was Old Tim. As others have written, he has 40years of experience guiding tours in Yellowstone and shares his wealth of knowledge about the flora, fauna and geology of Yellowstone and an easy-going manner.

When they say dress in layers, they mean it! You'll appreciate having layers to add or subtract during the day depending on the weather and activities. In order to minimize the fogging of the windows, they keep the front windows cracked and the rear exhaust fan running. It will be cool in the van! You'll also want true winter boots, not just hiking boots. The trails are not cleared and one misstep can put you in snow over your ankles.

I wore 4 layers on top (including a down parka) and long underwear and ski pants on the bottom. I also used hand and foot warmers and stayed comfortable all day. I brought along a fleece through for 'just in case,' but didn't use it and could have left it behind. Another customer who wore flannel lined jeans and long underwear had cold legs, however, so she might have benefitted from it if I'd known at the time.

A few things I wish I'd known or thought to ask before the tour:
Restrooms - facilities are available at different stops along the way and they frequently check to see if you need to use them. They range from toilets in heated buildings to long drops/latrines.

There isn't much space per person on the buses/vans. Pack lightly and compactly!

I appreciated having binoculars along; it made it easier to zero in on the bald eagles, bobcat and black wolf.

Lunch is from Ernie's deli for $10. If you have a chance to pack your own lunch, it may be worth it. The sandwich was good, but the chips (I saw cheetos, doritos, etc) and fun-size candy bars (whoppers, almond joy, etc) would not necessarily have been my choice.

Book a tour and you'll enjoy it!
