“Grand Chateau”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012

The Grand Chateau worked great for us. It was quiet without a casino, and was within close walking distance to all the big strip hotels. We found that they had enough of a market in the lobby that we didn't need to do much food shopping in nearby Walgreens. The rooftop pool is small and has limited shade umbrellas so we didn't use it. Excellent hotel for someone not interested in casino games.

Room Tip: The one bedroom on the 35th floor had an incredible view of the strip.

We booked one night here before checking into a luxury hotel for a conference. Located a half block off the strip on a side street, the location was okay and it appeared to be a newer facility. We'd never been to a timeshare and thought the room would be a grade above a typical hotel room. Not our first choice, but we thought we'll rack up the Marriott points for the few hours we were there and move along. Mistake.
The basic king room itself was clean and generous size, equipped with a microwave and refrigerator, seating area and breakfast table. Bath had a nice vanity and good lighting, lots of thick towels. HOWEVER, the king size bed was hard as a rock, the AC was loud and the walls were paper thin. I went up to the rooftop pool to relax after a long flight, and found the "pool" - 3 feet deep and approximately 10' x 10'. Crazy small, barely large enough for 10 people to stand in without touching. No laps here. The deck itself was wall to wall people drinking at a bar in the corner - a sidewalk atmosphere. NOT at all what I was expecting.
In the morning, I was awakened at 7am when the bed shook several times as the door to the next room slammed. I could hear loud voices talking as if they were in my bathroom. A call to the front desk resulted in quiet 10 minutes later. When checking out I asked what the commotion was, I was told it was housekeeping in the next room. TOTALLY unacceptable. No apology, no offer to award extra points. When I walked outside to leave the property, I stood in the self serve (no doorman) taxi line for 20 minutes as cabs drove by within sight. The hotel driveway is accessed by an alley off a side street and apparently there is no taxi light to alert passing cabs. I was ready to walk the block and half to the strip and hail a cab on the corner myself when finally a cab appeared to discharge passengers. The entire stay was very frustrating. We stay at Marriott hotels 8-12 nights per month and this was the bottom of the barrel. stay away.

1 block off the strip good for walking- but even better after the novelty of the walk wears off , you can drive the back way (turn right out of the Marriott, then left, then second stop sign rutn left and park at Paris Las Vegas / Ballys in about 2 minutes. Perfect - especially at night.

Typical Marriott timeshare hotel - everything done exactly right - well except the sign and there are no grounds.

Staff is teriffic - always at least two staff to get your car, everyone friendly and knowledgable.

We didn't even bother to go up and see the pool.

Finding it if you've never seen it is problematic - so it's really off Harmon Street (east) and Planet Hollywood Drive, (see the picture). We drove past it coming in at night and then didn't know how to get to it. In the day light it would be no problem except even then you don't see the sign until you're on top of it. Maybe a sign on the building would do the trick.

Room Tip: 1 I guess if you want a Vega Strip view you'll need to request it somehow. 2 Drive the back w...

I telecommute full time for my work. We had a week of our timeshare that we would lose if we didn't use it so thought we could work by day, play at night from this property.

Pros
I've stayed at many hotels on the planet and this by far has the most solid wifi. Rock solid all day.
Short walk to Aria Cosmopolitan and most anything on the strip
Drug store very very nearby
Free shuttle to supermarket
Spacious 1bedroom with full kitchen. 2 sinks in bath
Well equipped gym
Taxi service available
Flat screen tvs in bedroom and living room
Close to airport

Cons
Pool area on roof very small and crowded on weekend and no shade.
It's a timeshare so you will get a call about attending presentation. We ignore all that so not an issue
No cleaning services for the week. Extra charge if we wanted service
It's Las Vegas so you may have some loudness in the hallways especially on the weekend

Other notes
Did not avail ourselves of concierge or other activities that are available
No casino which is good or bad depending on your viewpoint

Room Tip: We stayed in 2211

The Marriott Grand Chateau has a really nice layout - big villas, with kitchens(!), that can connect to other villas as well for additional space. (A 2 bedroom villa is basically a one bedroom connected to a one bedroom suite.) The place is nicely appointed, with tasteful decor throughout. The rooftop pool has some nice views, and a bar area for those so inclined. It's cheaper than the comparable MGM Signature (which doesn't come with kitchens, AFAIK).

That said, there's several massive flaws in the design of the place that knocked it down from a 5-star to a 3-star property:
1) The place is a timeshare hotel, and the Marriott staff will hound you relentlessly about buying a timeshare, even if you're just there on a business trip, using it as a normal hotel. They'll pretend to be calling about something else, too, which is unusually deceptive for a company like Marriott.
2) The road access is terrible. There's a little driveway that gets completely clogged by cars and taxis, and people will cross into opposing traffic to get around the clogs, and then THEY get stuck, and then traffic backs up onto the street, and it's just a total nightmare. It can take 10-15 minutes from getting in your cab to getting onto the main street. Which is a distance of like 30 yards, total.
3) The front desk staff were surprisingly rude and unhelpful. (Again, very unusual for a Marriott.) They'd look at you and just ignore you, even after you'd been standing there trying to get their attention for 15 minutes - and it's not like there was a line or anything.
4) You might have to call for linens three or four times before they bring more towels up. And you need towels because they don't change them, apparently, even if they're all on the ground.
5) The kitchens don't vent. Cook anything in your room, and you'll be smelling it for the rest of your trip.

This sounds sort of whiny in retrospect, but I stand by them all. I'm a pretty easygoing traveler (I spend a lot of time on the road for business trips like this), and it takes a lot to annoy me at a place, but these guys managed it.

This hotel is so close to the strip, it is practically on the strip! It is a three minute walk to the strip - closer than some strip hotels that are set so far back. Clean, Marriott quality, hotel. No casino, which is a plus in my eyes (if you want a casino, trust me, you won't have a problem finding one). Complimentary wifi which is a huge savings when other hotels charge a ridiculous fee per device. Kitchenette in studio room was great, with fridge, micro, and toaster. All dishes and cutlery provided. Hotel secure after 6:30 - you have to use room key to access floor. Valet parking only. A little slow at times but nothing crazy. Always can get cabs easily. However, you can walk everywhere easily because you are in a great location. The only negative is the pool. When people say it is tiny, that is an understatement. A hotel this size should have something much bigger. It was probably smaller than most backyard pools - no word of a lie. However don't let this hold you back as you can always go spend the day at a neighboring hotel. There is no restaurant on site - true. But there are hundreds within steps of the place. Would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Pros- Rooms and common areas are clean and very well maintained. Very good location just off the vegas strip. Friendly staff. Very good gym if you're into fitness. Great for family and couples if you're not into the gambling and party scene. Decent 24 hour store in lobby if you need snacks or personal items. Right across the street from Planet Hollywood's Miracle Mile with plenty of restaurants and shopping. Complimentary valet. Great views of Vegas from rooftop. Cons - Have to listen to the time share sales pitch via telephone upon arrival to your room. No restaurant on-site. Very small pool on rooftop. No self parking. This was my second time staying at the Grand Chateau and I would stay here again.
