If you must stay hear, book the summit room which is better but still there are other resorts with high quality in Reno. The hotel has standard room which is really a 2 star quality and if you book in hotwire, priceline you will end in one of these room which are the lower floors. Other than that the casino is good, there is big arena for kids and never tried any food here.

Room Tip: Choose upper floor which are the summit rooms.

We are currently 40% through renovating our Summit rooms and all the Summit rooms will be renovated by April 20th. We are finalizing our lower floor GSR mock up room and will begin that renovation in October. While our GSR corridors and rooms are dated, they are clean and well maintained. We believe all of our guests receive great value for the price paid based on all of the additional amenities that GSR makes available compared to the other properties in the Reno/Tahoe area. We are able to cater to the business class, gambler, and family all in one location. We have recently completed renovations on our casino lounge bar "Wet" and will be fininshing up the main lobby and Front Desk area by the end of the month. Clearly we are the place to stay when your travel plans include Reno.

My husband and i stayed here for two nights at the last minute due to snow stoorms coming in the Lake tahoe area. We called and reserved and when we cheked in we found the room old and dirty and i got on the computer and checked the reviews again. what i had missed the first time i looked was that they said to make sure we asked for a room in The Summit. So i called the desk andd asked if there were summit rooms available and toldher i would be down to change. So we paid a little more and when we walked in this room in the summit we could not believe it was the same hotel. Beautiful room. we had a great two night visit, casino is nice size and lots of machines ...we ate at the Johnny Rockets in the hotel and it was great...had breakfast at one of the little cafes and also good. there was a dance contest when we were there and that was great fun to relax and watch.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room in The Summit!!

The "GSR" showed up on my company's travel website as the most affordable option around, so I figured I'd stray from the usual business hotels for this one stay. I'm sure this place is great if you're here to gamble and party, but it's not geared for what business travelers (speaking for myself) come to expect: parking close by, quick check in, and in your room in a few minutes. Like most casinos, you park a distance away (or use valet), have to search for the hotel desk, then walk through gambling to the elevators.
It does have free wifi, but there are no power outlets near the desk. While this is silly, it's also a sign that this place is not geared for people to actually work in.

Rating is 3 1/2 stars. Stayed here recently for four nites. The resort is undergoing a huge renovation which seems to be in order. It does seem in places to be rather outdated and worn. Ate at Johnny Rockets and didnt experience any residual smoke. Food was very reasonable and tasty too. Also went to Rim the Fusion/sushi place. Again very reasonable and my meal of orange chicken and my wifes sushi were both very good. The activity area is very nice and is a good respite from all the casino madness upstairs. They had just opened a new bar they were calling the Wet Bar due to the water walls around the bar. It was opening nite and it was packed and seemed to be a very nice addition. The rate we received for the room was acceptable (70) but I would try to get one of the renovated summit rooms. All in all a pleasant stay and would stay here again

Room Tip: I believe they are starting the renovation on higher than floor 18

We go to Reno/Sparks about 3 times per year. We usually stay at the Grand Sierra Resort in the Summit rooms. Although the rooms have become a bit worn and dated, they are still nice and provide the feeling of luxury at a less than 4 star price. We especially like the well appointed bathrooms, which have dark marble and tiles. The shower is elegant, and they provide a small television for viewing while you are getting ready. The bedroom is spacious, and has a comfortable sofa, which pulls out to a bed if needed. The bedroom t.v. is a large flat screen, and both t.v.s allow you to access a relaxation channel, with nature scenes and calm music.

The room also has a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, coffee maker, and cabinets.

We usually go other places for our casino and food. The Grand Sierra casino has very few penny and nickle machines that are not digital. We prefer to enjoy the older style slots. This is just our preferance though.

The food at the Grand Sierra Resort is good, but we have our favorites in town; so we do not always eat at the hotel.

Although there are higher end places to stay in the area, we recommend the Grand Sierra for the Summit rooms.

Got a good last minute rate via Hotwire to avoid getting stuck by winter storm in Lake Tahoe overnight. Ate at kid friendly Johnny Rockets but was smoky as it is an open air restaurant located next to the bar and betting screens and lighting was poor at our table. Burgers and such were very good. They also have a Starbucks for a quick coffee and oatmeal. This is the old Reno Hilton hotel and the guest room hallways still look the same as they did 10 years ago. Room were clean, but there was a chocolate chip in the middle of the floor between the beds. (Did they vacuum after the last guest or was housekeeping eating trail mix while they were cleaning?) Guest rooms do need complete updates, non-smoking rooms still had traces of smoke smell and had to sleep with sheet over my nose. Best thing to say, beds were very comfortable and clean. This hotel is in the middle of big renovations on the main floor, but looks like it's going to be a while before they get to the guest rooms. Liked the convenience of an airport shuttle - driver very pleasant. Wouldn't stay here again until I knew renovations were completed.

There was a problem at check-in with the rate we were promised. Probably really Expedia's fault, not the hotel's. The desk clerk worked really hard to try to get us the promised rate and brought in the manager to help. No dice, though. The room was spacious and comfortable, more than we expected at the price we did get. However, it had the faint odor of cigarette smoke though it was billed as a non-smoking room. The hotel is pet-friendly and they gave us dog water/food bowls and dog treats. There is a walking are for the dogs. Despite the problems, I would stay here again.
