Finally headed over to CR's for Brunch. Amazing meals, all of it. Wonderful server Jenna, and the manager Erin providing additional perfection. Beautiful decor inside and out. We will be back to this Jem!

We dine here several times a month. The food is consistently good and the menu is varied so you can find something for anyone's taste. The staff, especially the bar staff, are friendly and welcoming.

After hearing all of the hype about CR's I was really excited to go. We've been everywhere in Portsmouth (3 times over) so I was ready for something new. We went for my husband's birthday, on a Sunday, so it was not crowded and we were seated right away. It is super cute insider with double fireplaces and a nice bar.

The staff was nice enough and our server was friendly. The drinks were good, my husband was especially happy with his dirty martini.

Unfortunately I thought the food was not good. It tried really hard to be impressive but I thought most of it was poor.

We started with the wagyu meatballs and the spicy chicken spring rolls. The meatballs were nicely formed (a touch small for only getting 3 but hey, it's Wagyu beef), but they were drowned in sauce (and not an especially good sauce). I would recommend asking for sauce on the side. The spring rolls had a mostly good flavor to them but the filling consisted of onions the same size as the pieces of chicken. So they were overpowering the flavor of everything else, including the sweet chili dipping sauce (which was good but was exactly like the Sweet Chili sauce you buy at Trader Joe's).

I had the Pan Seared scallops, my favorite food in the world, and was thrilled when they put down 4 enormous scallops in front of me. I ended up eating 1 of them. They tasted so gross and weird, like spoiled fish. And again, I like sea scallops but there was something wrong with these. The gnocchi that came with it was ok, charred to the point where I also called it burned on some sides but not quite and it was also a little gooey for proper gnocchi. The butternut squash was perfection.

My mom's dish was awesome - the chili rubbed pork tenderloin. My god, it melted on the fork. And the flavor was outstanding. Her mac and cheese was okay, it's hard to do mac and cheese in a restaurant in my opinion.

My husband had the Shrimp Fra Diavola and he was disappointed. It was a small portion with just a couple of shrimp. The sauce didn't have the real kick you might want from a diavola (meaning "devil") dish. He didn't even finish the shrimp themselves because they also tasted off.

My father had the Steak Frites. He liked the steak but said the fries were cold and the green beans were rubbery.

One last side note, and this was just weird, when I made the reservation I made a note that it was my husband's birthday. You never know, sometimes they do something and I wouldn't have cared if they didn't. I walked in first and gave our names and they asked if it was someone's birthday. I said yes, pointed to my husband still outside, and they said, "Ok, because we were confused." I wasn't sure what there was to be confused about but whatever.

I figured since they asked something must be coming. I saw a candle go to another table and felt pretty certain. Then nothing happened. Hey, maybe they don't do birthday ice cream scoops or whatever, and that's totally their choice. It was just so bizarre they made a point to ask about it and then nothing happened.

So all in all, par at best. Would rather take the extra 5 minutes to go to Portsmouth, or 10 minutes to Newburyport.

The lunch menu has a lot to offer and at a reasonable price. I tried the Cuban Sandwich special that came with house made chips. The house made mustard and pickled onions were delicious. The reuben sandwich is tasty too. The only downside was the clam chowder that had a funky "fishy" taste. A little disappointing, but I know this is not the norm here. Next time, Dinner!
