Sandpiper Beach Resort
Ranked #13 of 37 Hotels in Cape May
Certificate of Excellence

We stayed mid-week in mid-September at the Sandpiper Beach Club in Cape May, NJ and thoroughly enjoyed it. The unit was a one bedroom with full kitchen on the first floor. The hotel is across the road from the beach, but you need to walk a little bit to the beach service hut where you get complimentary loungers, umbrellas, chairs. The unit was very clean and we loved it. The furniture is okay - beach decor. The price is pretty high considering how it was furnished, but the linens were crisp and everything was spotless. To me, it's worth it. I am not a fan of "charming" Victorian B&Bs where the draperies and soft furniture has been used without cleaning for last 100 years.

Pros: 1) super clean; 2) beach front (across the road); 3) beach service; 4) did I mention clean :)
Cons: 1) loud in-room central A/C (can be bothersome at night in the summer); Not many cons.

Located directly across the street (Beach Avenue) in Cape May, the Sandpiper is a great location with a great view. Our room was on the 3rd floor of the wing closest to the ocean and from the balcony, unless you look down, you’d hardly know there was a road between you and the road!

When we got to our room, we were very impressed with the décor and layout. You come in to a full kitchen area with marble counter tops, that opens out to a large living room with an ocean view balcony and another wall with large widows looking west down the shore. Our room had two bedrooms with 2 full (nicely appointed) bathrooms (one of them en suite). A minor complaint is that while the master bedroom had an ocean view, the smaller bedroom had windows looking out onto the hallway (fine for kids, I suppose … and since this room was at the end of the hall, it would be rare for anyone else to be walking by those windows).

When we checked in, they gave us a discount breakfast coupon to the Rusty Nail restaurant a block or two down Beach Avenue. This is a very casual (bathing suits are okay) place at the Beach Shack motel (a sister property to the Sandpiper) with great breakfasts. Not sure why they only gave us 1 coupon since we were there for 4 days, but it didn’t really matter since it was great to have the eat-in kitchen right in our room!

The center of Cape May is a very short walk, by the historic Congress Hall hotel (check out the “Blue Pig” restaurant). There are the typical tourist shops and great restaurants of all descriptions (don’t miss Kohr Brothers frozen custard shop … get the orange/vanilla swirl cone!) along a walking mall in the center of town. A long walk down the beach (or a short drive) toward the mouth of the Delaware River is the historic Cape May lighthouse which (on a clear day) offers spectacular views of the area.

One excellent perk that the Sandpiper (and their sister properties) offers is complementary beach-chair/umbrella/towel service right on the beach. Just walk up to their beach cabana, give your name and room number to the attendant and he’ll set up your chairs and umbrella for you at no extra charge (although a tip is much appreciated). Or, if the surf is a bit rough that day, there is a very nice swimming pool right in front of the hotel.

The cleaning staff did an excellent job and they were very friendly when they came to offer towel and linen service (twice a day … which is great for a beach hotel!).

I’d definitely recommend the Sandpiper to anyone who wants to get away for a few days at the low-key end of the “Jersey Shore”!

Room Tip: Ask for a 3rd floor room at the end of the east wing, closest to the ocean.

We stayed for 3 nights in September. It had been quite a few years since we stayed in Cape May and our stay at The Sandpiper was lovely.

The unit and all common areas were very clean. The renovation of this property from a Beach Drive Motel to small condo "resort" was well done. While Cape Resorts could not increase the overall unit size they utilized every square inch in the one bedroom unit that we stayed in. All of the finishes in the unit - fixtures, tile, marble countertops, linens and towels are upgraded.

We arrived before check-in and we were able to use the locker rooms off of the fitness room to change. We then walked down 1 small block to the beach in front of Congress Hall. They have complimentary beach services. It was so nice to just walk down and have a nice young man place 2 lounge chairs, table, umbrella and towels for us. After years of trekking to the beach with supplies this was a true vacation. At lunch time they bring menus so you can order lunch if you like (at an extra charge). This was lovely especially when we hadn't checked into our room. I see by other reviews that the beach services "in season" may not be as pleasant as what we experienced but these services alone are worth staying at a Cape Resort property!

The front desk called us on our cell phone when our room was ready. Our unit had everything you could want. Full size fridge with ice maker, stove and sink. All the kichen equipment you could need. We also had a small balcony overlooking the parking area, pool, Beach Dr and the beach.

There was twice daily made service. More towels in the room, beach and pool then even I could ever use.

If I had any complaints it would be for the price, they should have a bellman to take your luggage to your room. However, they did have luggage carts to use. Its just a touch that upgrades a property and gives a better first impression than hauling your own stuff.

The location of The Sandpiper is ideal as Cape May is very walkable from this part of town. The Washington St Mall is about a 3 block walk as is just about everthing else you may be looking for.

In the end, I would love to stay at The Sandpiper again.

Our first time doing our summer vaca in September has been amazing!
We stayed for 5 days the second week of Sept, after all of the labor day crowds have left and kids are back in school. B/c of the timing we paid $220 a night for this 5 star resort. So let me tell you bout the sandpiper...

The resort units are privately owned but leased out by the Cape resorts group. We usually stay away from renting condos since you never know what you can walk into, and there is no maid service and you have to bring your own towels, sheets etc. NOT THE CASE HERE!

Gorgeously decorated rooms all with the same layout design and amenities. Very comfy bed, gorgeous white linen, marble countertops throughout and sparkling stainless steel appliances including full size fridge, oven and dishwasher. You literally eat every meal in, Would imagine this is great for ones with young children. Also there is a washer and dyer, it's great going home with clean laundry!

Almost all units face the ocean with gorgeous views of the beach and pool. We didn't use the beach service, but that is available, even in the off season.

There is a well equipped fitness center with a spa style locker room. Twice daily maid service was true luxury. We really loved this place and always wanted to stay here, so glad we finally did. We will be back!

This summer was the third time we have stayed at the Sandpiper, and as always, we were very pleased with our stay. My only request would be to make the pool area a cell phone free zone (we are supposed to be relaxing on vacation, not chit-chatting on cell phones right?) but it is not the hotel's fault that some of the guests are rude loud cell phone talkers.

This year I was not happy with the room I was assigned upon check in, and it was promptly changed,

All the staff are friendly, courteous and happy. I would recommend the Sandpiper to anyone who wanted to enjoy their stay at Cape May, but you better have plenty of cash.

Room Tip: I like to stay away from the staircases / elevators for more privacy. Ocean view is definitely worth...

The Sandpiper is in a great location, just across the street from the beach. It offers two bedroom suites, which are harder to come by. It is a newer facility and is kept very clean. On paper it seems wonderful. The problem is they are just too many little things that aren't great--along with a couple of big ones, which makes me think it just isn't worth the money.

Perhaps the biggest issue is the beach service. Cape May Resorts offers beach service--chairs, towels and food to order (additional cost). The problem is you are squished into a very small space, sometimes eight rows back and no more than two-three feet away from
the next group of people. There is only a certain space where chairs can be set up and it
simple isn't big enough to accommodate everyone, That means, if you have kids, they have
no place to play, or you end up standing the whole day in a clearing of sand. A line can
form a half hr prior to the start of beach service. That means, since beach service starts
at 8:00 you need to get on line at 7:30. In addition, there are some people who seem to
get special treatment. (I tip every day. I'm friendly and thankful and still can't seem to get
what others do. For example, some people's seats are held for hrs, with nothing on them
and no one there. If you ask, this isn't supposed to happen, but it does.)

In addition to this big problem, the hotel has lots of little problems. For example, our
bathroom doors don't latch closed. They close 99% but you can't lock them at all, because
of that 1%. So basically, don't knock on the door, because you will open it in the process.
Sure, they can send someone to fix it, but it's hard enough to coordinate with my family,
never mind the handyman. The corners of the hallways also seem to have big mosquito
problems. one of the gentleman at the front desk is not the most welcoming. Even when
you ask a simple question, he has a way of making you feel like you're interrupting his day.
Also, in some rooms, the windows feel really, really low and the are no window guards.
Beds are placed against these windows, so keep them locked at all times if you have little
ones (although someone I met said her window locks were broken.). Oh and they short sheet the beds. For this price they really need to get sheets that fit.

Furthermore, the cancelations policy is no good. Keep your fingers crossed that no one gets
sick, breaks a bone, or has an unexpected conflict, because if so, your money is gone.

Finally, some accommodations are huge and some quite small, despite the same cost, so
choose your room wisely. (Check out the proximity to the road as well.)

All in all, it's just not worth the money.

we love the congress hall properties and have been to both the sandpiper and congress hall many times. just a heads up from our last trip to the sandpiper,,,, our room was one of the handicap accessible rooms. It was a last minute trip, and this was the last room available, we took what was available and didn't ask questons. If you have a toddler beware,,, there was no tub in this room. The bathroom was basically a wet room, with curbless access to the shower. It was super slipperly, and my little one fell. Luckily she did not get too hurt, just scared herself silly. Management was great and got us a few extra shower mats, but I know in the future to ask if the room has a bathtub! It never occurred to me it would not have a tub, as all the previous times (3) I have stayed here there has been a tub.
