The Chalfonte is absolutely beautiful and the staff go above and beyond in every way possible! We held our wedding reception here Memorial Day weekend 2016, and cannot thank the staff (especially Terry and bartender Paul!) enough for their excellence in service and kindness! It is a historic, charming property with updated bathrooms, beautiful linens, and comfy beds. The porch furniture and rocking chairs are so enjoyable. We are local to the Cape May area, and always feel relaxed at The Chalfonte. Would definitely recommend it for anyone seeking a restful stay, charming experience, and delicious food & drinks, and especially to anyone looking for an elegant wedding weekend, Cape May style. :) Keep up the good work!

Room Tip: As with all hotels in Cape May, guests should call rather than book online to understand the type of room they are booking.

The Chalfonte is very dated and in need of repair. We stayed for the weekend and were disappointed to find the plaster in our room cracked at several points. There was a tiny heater in the room and thankfully it was not a cold weekend so we did not really need it. I would hate to think what it would have been like if it were cold outside. Let's talk about the bathrooms.........well, I stayed in a room that had the sink in the bedroom and the bathroom was a tiny toilet and a small shower stall. They were fairly modern but the bathroom itself was teeny tiny. So much so you could not fit a sink in it. This was disappointing but after walking the hallway I felt grateful because there were several rooms on my floor that had common bathrooms. That's right, a room without a bathroom, bathroom in the hall that you share with other guests. These bathrooms in the hallway were anything but modern. I was told at the desk that those rooms were very discounted.......So, ask before you book it your room does have its own bathroom.

Apart from the broken plaster wall, the basic supplies in the room were barely there. For example I did have a tissue box in the room but it literally had one tissue in it. When housekeeping came they did not give us another box of tissues. Bring your own soap and shampoo. The shampoo provided is really not even enough for one person to wash their hair.

This hotel could be something very special if some money were put into it to update. There is a lovely hidden seating area at the very top of the hotel that my husband discovered. We sat up there and had coffee in the morning and it really was lovely. You had the feeling of being in a tree house, so lovely. The bar and the porch in this hotel are also lovely. They are both very inviting. The staff is very professional and accommodating.

If you decide to book.............Ask about the room description before you book, some rooms are definitely better than others. I would ask for a room with a balcony and larger private bathroom.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a larger private bathroom.

Hi Mary B.

Thank you for your review and your kind words regarding our staff, the cupola, and our porch/bar.

The hotel is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Cape May - this is our 140th year!

One of the primary building materials is plaster and with our prime location so close to the ocean, plaster can tend to be a bit fussy. Our maintenance staff works hard to maintain the historical charm of the property & will certainly address any peeling plaster issues.

The style of bathroom is considered a European bath; we do have a variety of room types including rooms that have larger baths (our premium bath when browsing the room types.) The traditional rooms are the rooms with baths on the hall; these rooms are only booked when requested. We have many loyal guests who prefer these rooms as it has been a long standing tradition at the hotel. It is also an economical choice - the traditional room rates are never higher than $120 per night even at the peak of the season.

The front desk would be happy to supply any additional supplies including tissues or additional shampoo

Visited in the off-season, but got a clear sense of the charm and style of this historic hotel. The Victorian-era building retains that feel, with careful decorations and lots of inviting seating and rocking chairs, especially on the expansive porch. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, from front desk clerks to housekeeping. The hotel restaurant, under the direction of Miss Lucille (a local legend who has worked there for 80 years!), serves traditional comfort food with a seafood emphasis, although limited vegetarian options. Rooms are small and simple, without TV or telephones, for a true feeling of getting away from it all. Each one is slightly unique and carefully decorated with seashore colors and themes, giving this large hotel the feeling of a bed and breakfast. Would definitely go back!

We had the opportunity to stay at The Chalfonte Hotel for our anniversary weekend and unfortunately the highlight for us was the complimentary bottle of wine. The staff at check-in was fine but they never attended to our only issue...a ceiling fan-stuck on-that with the a/c on-controlled by the Hotel-made the room too cold for my wife. We had heard about the super on-site restaurant-The Magnolia Room-but it was closed for the season. We stayed in a very nice room but it lacked a closet of any kind which made some of our clothes always in the way. We had a very nice enclosed porch (attached to our room) but it was attached to a public porch which made using it awkward and conversations uncomfortable. The room's bathroom was modern but tiny for someone my size-I'm 6'2". There was nothing wrong with The Chalfonte Hotel but with so many options in Cape May I'm not sure that there was anything great...either...Sorry!

Had drinks on the porch before dinner , bartender in the King Edward bar is excellent. Sitting on the porch having a cocktail is a wonderful experience. Dinner was fabulous no Kentucky Fried Chicken here. Dessert flourless chocolate torte was over the top good. Service was excellent . We had 5 people in our group and everyone raved about their dinner. Three had the famous chicken , one the fish special of the day and one had the crabcake. Everyone was very happy with their meals from the biscuits to appetizer to salad and then entrée and dessert. Thumbs up !
