What a great idea. A wonderful dining experience that allows to pay for your meal and someone else's. The food is five star quality and the 3 courses will fill you up. The staff is all volunteer's and they are dedicated to great service. You can't tip, so make an additional donation. Great experience that will leave you feeling good for a while. Thanks to JBJ!

As the menu varies according to what ingredients they happen to have that day, the results can vary as well. A 3-course "gourmet" meal for a flat rate of $20 (and a "pay it forward" $20 extra) is a great deal, and you can walk away with a great feeling, having given back to the community. Well worth a trip!

Heard about the Soul Kitchen on national news and had the opportunity to dine at the restaurant during a recent visit to Toms River. The dining was a unique experience. With the exception of the chef, the entire staff are volunteers and they are eager to please. The restaurant is relatively small and seats about 40 people and does not accept reservations.. Dinners are served Thursday thru Saturday from 5 to 7 pm and a brunch on Sunday afternoon. The menus are generally based on the overabundance of food from the local grocery stores and they change every two weeks. The price of all of the dinners is $20 and it includes a drink of water or ice tea, an appetizer of either soup or salad, entree and dessert with coffee. In addition, a large portion of the $20 goes toward providing food for the less fortunate. The food was delicious. Our party dined on three different entrees and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal and the service was great. There were two things that detracted from the great experience, the restaurant was very loud from the diners, and second, the food items were not exactly as presented on the menu. For example, my entree was to include green beans and kale was substituted for the beans. During my next trip to Toms River, I will definitely be dining at the Soul Kitchen.

We have heard so much about this place so me and my husband a another couple decided to go there last night. It was not what we expected. I really did not know what to expect but OMG it was fantastic. From the time we entered the staff was Superb. The staff all helped each other. They brought out a small hummus tray to eat We place our order from soup or salad to main course and dessert. Each item we ate got better with the next. Our waitress Shannon told us the menu changes every 2 weeks. I had salmon over risotto. My husband and our friend had pork loin with garlic mash and Brussel sprouts. Our other friend order a creamed pasta with asparagus followed by blood orange cake for dessert. They have certain price for meal but if one does not want to pay you can could volunteer your services. Read the site that describes everything.
The place was clean the service superb to the meal fantastic.
This is a good cause. We will be repeating our visits there and already my friend wants to volunteer to help.
Everyone walks out feeling great.
It is a clean environment so no byob allowed. A must to put on your to do list.

Don't be misled by the name. It's not soul food... it's not just a kitchen... it's gourmet food in an attractive casual restaurant that's good for the soul because it's for a good cause. Thank you, Jon Bon Jovi!

$20 prix fixe includes soup or salad, bread, iced tea, entree, dessert and coffee or hot tea. All were excellent. No tipping allowed. No sales tax. I had New England clam chowder, a big portion of broiled salmon over lentils, and chocolate mousse with tasty chocolate shavings. Mi amor had pork medallions. All were delicious! Perfectly prepared, promptly served, nice presentation.

Bright, clean restaurant with cheerful and attentive waitstaff. It was a bargain price for a great meal, so we gladly left an additional donation. The only minor detail was the noise of many happy patrons bouncing off the walls.

Located in a strip mall behind CVS near the traffic signal at Silver Bay and Hooper Ave. Some of the proceeds support an adjacent food pantry that closes before the 5PM restaurant opening. Check JBJ Soul Kitchen's days and hours before you go. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
