A few hours in the beautiful Addo bush at Schotia in the company of an extremely knowledgeable host in Justin a couple of weeks ago has confirmed my considerable respect for the people who dedicate themselves to the conservation and management of wildlife in South Africa. Justin and his family have created an environment in which the animals evidently thrive, and where visitors leave well -informed having enjoyed a condensed game-viewing experience. Viewing the rhino at close-hand was a truly memorable experience. So too was watching an elephant feeding itself soil and learning that they do this for its mineral content, hearing that the delicate impala are very competent and look after themselves really well, following a buffalo herd on the move after dark, seeing all manner of antelope including my favourite nyala and waterbuck, debating the interesting question of indigenous vs alien (according to whose timescale?), and what can be done about poaching, amongst so much else. All this, and a very tasty meal at the lapa too! Thank you for a very interesting experience and your excellent hospitality.
