Owner description: Schotia offers one of the best chances to see lions in the wild. This private malaria free reserve close to the Addo Elephant National Park is probably the most densely stocked reserve in Africa, and with over 40 mammal species and approximately 2000 animals, can offer consistently good game viewing throughout the year.

A few hours in the beautiful Addo bush at Schotia in the company of an extremely knowledgeable host in Justin a couple of weeks ago has confirmed my considerable respect for the people who dedicate themselves to the conservation and management of wildlife in South Africa. Justin and his family have created an environment in which the animals evidently thrive, and where visitors leave well -informed having enjoyed a condensed game-viewing experience. Viewing the rhino at close-hand was a truly memorable experience. So too was watching an elephant feeding itself soil and learning that they do this for its mineral content, hearing that the delicate impala are very competent and look after themselves really well, following a buffalo herd on the move after dark, seeing all manner of antelope including my favourite nyala and waterbuck, debating the interesting question of indigenous vs alien (according to whose timescale?), and what can be done about poaching, amongst so much else. All this, and a very tasty meal at the lapa too! Thank you for a very interesting experience and your excellent hospitality.

We were staying at the Addo Elephant Back Safari camp and paid for the optional day long excursion to Addo National Park followed by the Tooth & Claw Safari at Schotia. We met our guide for the day, Reinier, outside Addo at about 10am and were taken into the park. What followed was a drive round the park by somebody who knew all the familiar spots to observe the animals. We saw plenty of elephants of all sizes. After a light lunch at Schotia HQ, we changed vehicles to a Land Rover for the T&C safari itself. The first part of this lasted about 2 hours during which time we were directed by the the other guides who were in contact over the radio stating what they had spotted and where. Tea and cake were taken at the farmhouse and then a sundown safari continued. We were lucky to follow a lioness who had awoken and was starting to hunt. This turned out to be unsuccessful as 4 out of 5 hunts are but nevertheless was exhilarating. We finished the day with an evening meal at the lapa, which consisted of a barbecue expertly cooked and washed down with complimentary drinks. A long day ended at about 9pm but it was well worth the time to see a wide variety of game in the wild accompanied by a friendly and informative guide. Thank you Reinier!

The Schotia Tooth and Claw Safari was absolutely incredible! We were so close to the animals, and our driver, Edward was so friendly and knowledgeable about the animals. He made sure we were able to get the perfect pictures and see as many animals as possible! The dinner that night was also very special, as we waited around a lovely camp fire and then enjoyed a delicious meal. We would certainly love to return!

Some reviewers stating that this is a big zoo, I kind of agree with... a fair few of the game you would not see in the Cape and if you wish to travel with children and stay out of malaria regions, this is a good option to give them a taste of what safari among wild animals can look like. Don't miss a game drive in the Addo National Park though, these two experiences complement each other nicely!
We saw the three lions stalking prey and hunt (though without success) which made it very special. I cannot praise our guide, Donovan, enough as he gave the animals space while still showing them to us close-up. I found it uncomfortable how other drivers / guides followed the hunting lions from a bare two-meter distance - the antelopes just had to look at the Land Rovers to know where the danger was coming from ... Our driver chose a different tactics, anticipated where the action is developing to and drove us to a vantage point where we could follow it from close-up without disturbing the animals, thank you!

Had an incredible time on the Tooth & Claw Safari. We had Scott as our guide and he was fantastic; very knowledgeable and informative. Got out of the Jeep to walk through the trees to get up close to the giraffe. Also got far closer to the lions and elephants than I ever expected to. We finished with a few drinks around a fire and a sit down meal with out guide. Would highly recommend!
