Owner description: Schotia offers one of the best chances to see lions in the wild. This private malaria free reserve close to the Addo Elephant National Park is probably the most densely stocked reserve in Africa, and with over 40 mammal species and approximately 2000 animals, can offer consistently good game viewing throughout the year.

My husband and I just returned from a month's adventure in Africa. Our first ever safari experience was at Schotia, which was recommended by our bed and breakfast host in Wilderness. Let me say that overall, it's entertaining and a rather fun experience seeing all the animals up close and personal. We spent 2 nights in the reserve and thoroughly enjoyed our lodge, which was lit by candles, and all along the pathway leading to it from the roadway. The food though is mediocre. Game drives: Our guide, Zane, was fabulous. He is extremely knowledgeable about the reserve itself, and all the animals (and we did see many, i,e. lions, zebras, elephants, crocodiles, hippos, rhinoceros, impala, kudu, etc.). Zane was very accommodating and we particularly enjoyed our half day with him in Addo Elephant Park. The negative side is that it seems a bit contrived, a bit like an outside, drive-through zoo. The guides pretty much know where all the animals are located. But it's perfect if you want to see the big five in a small game park.

Enjoyed a great afternoon and evening game drive. Saw loads of animals up close and personal. Guides are very knowledgeable. Had a great evening meal under the stars. Great fun for everyone. Would highly recommend this to anyone in that area

We opted for the combined day tour - Addo Elephant reserve in the morning the Schotia in the afternoon.
We were collected from our lodge and introduced to the others on our tour ( a lovely family of 5 from Denmark) by our guide Scott.
We arrived at Addo to start our tour. Scott was very knowledgeable and helped us differentiate between the myriad of bok, impala, kudu..... Then we saw the elephants - amazing. In fact whether by luck or Scott's judgement we saw lots of elephants.
After lunch we arrived at Schotia - where we viewed game all afternoon - giraffe, Cape buffalo, white rhino, hippo, zebra....... All of this before we before we saw the lions - who were replete from the zebra they had killed the day before.
Initially we thought the price quite high for the day ( R2500 each) - but at the end of the experience I would rate it as one of the best value experiences I have ever had. AMAZING.
Thanks to Scott to - he was great throughout - answering any questions, no matter how many times I asked the same ones.
If we could have we would have rated this day as a 6 out of 5!!

We have several friends who toured the adjacent Addo park without seeing many elephants and no lions, so we opted to pay for one night at a nearby private reserve and were very happy with our experience.

When I called, the receptionist offered me their winter special price, taking 20% off the stay, which was a great start.

We arrived around 2pm and the afternoon game drive started at 3pm, so that gave us time to tag our luggage which they took to our room while we enjoyed tea and biscuits.

Donovan was our guide for each of 3 drives and he was very friendly and knowledgable not only about the animals and species, but also the particular personalities of the animals there at Scotia. We saw elephants, giraffes, so many grazers (Impala, eland, haartebeast, wildebeest, zebra, kudu, springbok, blesbuck (brown and white color variants), water buck, reed buck, sable antelope, duiker, and nyala), and other creatures like warthogs, a mongoose, ostriches, and many other birds.

You break for tea around 5pm, then get drinks and a lovely buffet dinner in their outdoor Lana around 7pm before going back out for a night drive.

On our night drive we got up close to their lions (they have 2 males and one female currently) and were able to observe them quite close. That was an amazing experience considering the vehicles are open-sided! My 11yo and 9yo were very well behaved! We also got to see a couple of the three hippos out and about.

The next morning we saw more of the lions, rhinos, and a crocodile, and had fun trying to remember what we had learned by identifying the different grazers before being told which they were. We even saw 2 baby spring boks! Too shy to let us get very close, but still very sweet.

In all, it was very worthwhile. And I'm glad we spent the night there first then did a self-drive in Addo the next day. We knew more about the species having been shown by the guide the day before, rather than trying Addo first then adding Scotia 2nd.

We were lucky to be escorted by Zane who is very knowledgable about the animals in the reserve and had many fascinating facts and anecdotes to share. The 'half time' coffee is a welcome stop to warm up and the meal served towards the end of the evening is welcome fodder to stoke the fire (don't expect too much in the way of culinary flair here); we were lucky enough to have extremely close encounters with lions, elephants, and hippos to name but a few. Do wrap up warm for this drive - once the sun goes down it gets very cold in the open-sided vehicles.
