So glad you guys enjoyed your stay! WE loved having you!!!!!!! Until next time :)
We chose Ubuntu carefully based on reviews and photos, but were very disappointed. Having backpacked all around the world, I know a good hostel when I see one... and this isn't one. The place has a friendly vibe and some nice features, but everything feels grubby and tired.
We'd booked a private twin room. It was so dingy and dirty that we avoided putting any of our stuff in cupboards or on the floor. The room was situated between the main bathroom, the kitchen area and the lounge, so hoping for any quiet was ridiculously optimistic. The corridor directly outside our door was also apparently the perfect spot for people to stop and chat loudly in the early hours, so that was nice. You always get inconsiderate people in hostels, but some of those who made the most noise were staff.
The kitchen counters were unpleasantly sticky, in keeping with the rest of the hostel, and I'd strongly suggest you travel with your own mug, as all of Ubuntu's are dirty, chipped or distinctly lacking in handles.
With a serious clean-up and some TLC, Ubuntu Backpackers could be great. And if it was, guests might be more inclined to keep it that way. As it is, I can't bring myself to recommend it unless you like your accommodation grimy/shabby/unloved, have a penchant for bad jazz music, and/or are too stoned to care.
The staff was scattered and it was frequently unclear who was working at the hostel versus who was a guest just hanging out. The dorm beds were average and if you're tall, not convenient. I did not feel confident in the lockers provided, considering a lock didn't keep them closed properly.
Really enjoyed my stay here and can't add much more to the previous reviews. I only want to mention that it's a little further away from Main beach so if you're a beginner (relating to surfing ) you may find a more convenient place closer to that beach. If you have a car it wouldn't matter though.
7 days of pure relaxation in a down to Earth artistic sanctuary, friendly staff and SA's No1 wave on view from the balcony, makes it hard to go wrong.
Where Ubuntu really makes it's Authentic mark is it's attention to detail, immaculately clean throughout, polite and chilled staff that are always on hand and happy to go the extra mile with a smile.
Well done to all who made it a week to never forget, a special thanks to Antonio who kept to his word and taught me to stand up on a surfboard in my first ever surf.
See you next year same time.
African Ubuntu, you guys rock! Great Beach views, amazing staff, great community, Conscious living atmosphere, beautiful garden, walking distance to the beach, shops and restaurants. Great for surfing if that's your thing.
