Reeden Lodge
Reviewed 16 December 2016

Reeden Lodge perfectly encapsulates the essence of what Franschhoek is. It's quiet and wonderfully private with beautiful views of the field and the mountains. The owners are always willing to help with anything you need such as things to do around town or just basic history of Franschhoek. The cottages were very clean and well maintained and the whole experience was perfect for a weekend getaway with my girlfriend.

Put Reeden Lodge at the top of your list if you want the perfect Franschhoek experience.

We stayed here with our three boys, ages 12, 9 and 9 for three nights. Henry, the owner, is a gem and a wealth of information. The cottage we stayed in was good, but a bit tired. Some of the dinnerware needed to be washed before use, but that seems par for the course in all self-catering places we've stayed. The cottages are next to a rustic pond and animal field, so there are lots of insects and the frogs are really noisy at night, which we liked. This is not 5 star accommodation, but it is pretty good value for Franschhoek. We enjoyed our stay.

After a tour through western Cape where we went from nice and neat to very enjoyable cottages, we made a stopover in Reeden lodge. What a deception ! It is run down and also dirty. We had to clean all the dishes and scrap the pans of previous bacon before cooking. despite of its ages the fridge keeps on working, but as the thermostat is fixed on 1. It smells rotten meat, probably some previous guest had a surprise. The wire of the microwave was cut and repaired with a tape. And finally we were kindly invited to share the swimming pools with ducks and geese who have their own access at night.
There is a nice view and even if the owners are nice we don't recommande at all.

Reeden Lodge is a special spot. The cottages are spacious, self catering units with great views. My kids loved the farm animals, open field and swimming pool. If your expecting 5 star accommodations this is not a spot for you. It's a 5 star for location, 5 stars for views and hospitality. Do not stay here expecting brand new facilities and then complain. We were comfortable and happy. It's a nice easy walk into town. Henry the owner is a lovely man.

We stayed over at Reeden Lodge for just one night, and weren't disappointed. I see from other reviews that some complain about the need for some upgrades to the place... I can see why but at the same time, it's far from run-down. I think our cottage was the Holly Tree, it was quite alright and nothing to really complain about. We were surprised how low the price was, so that's good. The owner was nice too.

I sure wouldn't mind staying there again, it's a good base for the area. And at the end of the day, we enjoyed dropping off the car and going for a walk in town and not caring about how many drinks I had since I was a short walk away.

A bit disappointed on arrival as Willow Tree cottage is a bit run down. But after a while we got over this as the open yard plus big pool proved a winner in the hot Dec weather. Henry the owner is very helpful and installed a new fridge overnight when we had problems. The cottage is serviced on a daily basis. Security is OK but not at a high level - we had no security issues during our 10 day stay.

Room Tip: The rooms around the pool area looked in better condition

Having stayed in several very nice guest houses and hotels during our month in Southern Africa we were mildly disappointed with our first impression of our cottage; that said this was a very different price to what we had been paying so not a fair comparison. We only stayed two nights and by the time we left (two couples) we were much happier and would have stayed longer given the chance; sadly this was the end of our holiday. Upon reflection Reeden Lodge is a perfect base to explore Franschhoek as it's a short stroll into town and yet beautifully quiet away from the main street. Polly and Henry are delightful hosts, the bedding was pristine, the water hot and everything worked perfectly. The views of mountains surrounding the area are spectacular, we felt the grounds could do with a tiny bit more care but the grass was cut and without too close an inspection it all looked tidy and certainly not unkempt as some previous reviews stated. We were two couples and all agreed it was extremely good value but also that it would be perfect to stay with children, in fact heaven for them to run around safely; animals to see and a pool to swim in. If we returned to the area and wanted somewhere to stay I wouldn't hesitate to book this again, you just have to be aware it's not 5* and it doesn't profess to be either.

Room Tip: Pepper Tree Cottage was perfectly adequate
