A beautiful way to start a South African vacation is with a few days at La Residence - an easy drive from the Cape Town airport and one of the most captivating areas in the country. Beautiful accommodations (we were in a 2-bedroom villa with our friends), stunning setting, and personal attention to every detail. From sophisticated but home-y food, to a fully stocked honor bar in the villa, peacocks in our back yard (they almost distracted us from the vineyards at our back door - but not quite) and ripe plum trees at the front gate, this property is magnificent in every way. We rode bikes into town, stopping along the way to admire the scenery, toured wineries, hiked, and spent lazy evenings enjoying our patio. Hated to leave, but couldn't wait for the rest of our adventure!

We came to La Residence to escape the tail end of the English winter and get a much-needed battery charge before a busy summer ahead. Having stayed for three days last year and loved it, we booked ten days here this time - and still left wanting more. The views down the valley and across the orchards to the mountains are fabulous, and set the tone for your stay.

Edward Morton and his team go to huge lengths to ensure that their guests are well looked after and the grand formality of the hotel is perfectly complemented by the warmth, friendliness and efficiency of the staff, all of whom, from managers to trainees, are delightful and proactive.

The bedrooms are beautifully furnished and well provisioned, and we enjoyed several excellent lunches and dinners, inside and out. On the colder evenings a log fire in the Great Hall took the chill away and enhanced the atmosphere. The pool isn't the largest, but it's refreshing.

There is no better base for a stay in the Cape than Franschhoek: it's a delightful town surrounded by vineyards and fruit orchards, the local shops have everything you need, and Cape Town is only an hour's drive away. If you love exploring regional food and wines this is heaven on earth: Franschhoek is one of the culinary capitals of South Africa and restaurants like Foliage, the Tasting Kitchen, Bread and Wine, la Petite Ferme and Bon Vivant are all to be found within a ten minute drive. 30-40 minutes drive takes you to Stellenbosch, and restaurants like Overture and Terroir.

We have already booked our return to La Residence, and we are counting the days. It enjoys very high occupancy rates, so book early to avoid disappointment.

This was my second visit and it was as good as the first. The staff is exemplary and the rooms are delightful. The property is small, 11 rooms, and with spacious grounds, the property never feels busy. The restaurant has very good food and eating on site is a pleasure.

Wonderful terrace for breakfast (top quality) and dinner. Sun sprays, drinks and food available at swimming pool. Last but not least, good house wines provided for the dinner. World class !

We were lucky enough to get a reservation for dinner at La Residence on our current holiday in South Africa. What an amazing place to eat!

La Residence is a very grand hotel with only 11 rooms, in a beautiful setting overlooking the winelands on the outskirts of Franschoek. It has stunning views and the sunset is spectacular!

We were greeted and looked after by Wes, the in-duty front of house manager and apparently 'general fixer'. He was friendly, personable and very charismatic, taking the time to show us around the hotel, including s vacant bedroom, and explain it to us. The whole place is decorated in a sort of 18th century grand French style, yet it created a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The restaurant is in the main room of the house, which is very large and elongated. We didn't find it lacking atmosphere, as some have.

The food was good, although I wouldn't describe it as outstanding (apart from the tomato and basil soup, which had only potato added to thicken it. That was delightful!!). The staff were all extremely helpful, clearly well trained and knew their jobs. Joseph was one of the chef's and he explained the menu to us with knowledge and confidence. House wines - all from local vineyards - are included and were paired to suit each course of the menu.

While it was expensive by South African standards, it was most certainly not based on what you would pay in the by UK and European and the additional cost compared to other local restaurants was well worth it for the setting snd the service.

All in all, we had a lovely experience at La Residence and would not hesitate to return again!
