Super 8 Roswell

I don't know about you, but when it comes to a room for the night, the main test of whether or not the lodging choice is superior hinges upon receiving a good night's sleep. Both the wife and I agreed that this Super 8 motel was the best of the seven different locations of all types and descriptions in which we stayed during our New Mexico vacation because "we slept like logs." Aside from two moderately firm queen-sized beds and pillows with good support, the room was extremely quiet for three reasons. First, the in-room refrigerator was virtually noiseless. Secondly, the air conditioner was whisper quiet. And thirdly, we stayed on a Sunday night into Monday morning which meant there were few other guests and no parking lot noises to disturb a perfect night's slumber. Even the relatively small indoor swimming pool was shut early due to lack of interest. Perfect! The establishment's owner greeted us upon arrival and was very cordial. He has been operating the facility for the past 15 years. Unlike the Choice Hotels chain (which includes Comfort Inn), he told us the internal Wyndham reservation system utilized by Super 8 does not include full details on the nature of the room booked, such as "two queen beds, non-smoking with a working desk." He showed me the computer screen and sure enough, the only items about my reservation were my name and address and the room rate. Therefore, at least in the case of this location, if you are particular about such room details, it would be a good idea to call the local Super 8 directly well in advance of your visit to confirm the specifics of your reservation.

Stayed here one night, would definitely stay again. Easy to find, friendly from the moment of check in to the moment of departure. It's nothing fancy as far as rooms go, but the bed was comfy, the shower had more than enough hot water, and the internet worked well. In the morning, we had missed breakfast, yet the manager still went out of his way to give my husband some juice for us--very happy for that! Roswell is a cute, fun place to visit, and this stay made our visit all the better. Thank you!

This was the first time we had stayed in a super 8 and we booked it as it had good reviews on trip advisor. I personally found it to be average. The fact that a continental style breakfast was included made it good value. The manager was extremely helpful when I had to make a phone call to the UK and didn't overcharge me. There was good wifi in the room and the bed was comfortable. I would stay there again.

The basic rooms were comfortable. It was in a good area. However the indoor pool and spa were extremely filthy. General motel maintenance was average at best. There was definitely room for improvement. Just an average Super 8. Nothing super bad, but nothing to get excited about. I used Tripadvisor's high #3 ranking of this motel to choose it. Looking at what seemed to be much nicer motels in the area, I'm not sure how it got rated so highly ? Of the 9 motels we stayed at on this recent trip, this one comes in at number 9. Price is much too high for what you get. (But in fairness, the whole area is overpriced.) A little more attention to detail would make this a better place to stay. It's not terrible yet, but it seems to be slowly headed in that direction.

This was our 28th hotel stay in around fifteen weeks of travel across North America and one of the least impressive. We stayed two nights over New Year’s Eve in a queen bed room, for an average of $75/night (incl. tax), booked direct with the hotel a few days before our stay.

Overall: Rooms are similar to other Super 8’s we’ve stayed in however we found this place a bit run down and ‘tired’. Staff attitude was completely indifferent, and we felt invisible during our stay. Our check in experience was pretty much 'here's the key' and lacked the usual information about breakfast times, wifi password and (free) smile.

What’s good: Breakfast was the standard Super 8 continental included in the rate, and was available in the reception area which was clean and tidy. A coffee machine, mini fridge and microwave were available in the room as well as a desk, and one recliner chair.

Colour tv had plenty of cable channels.

Bedding was comfortable and towels the usual hankerchief-sized, crunchy style. A drink machine was available, with coffee 24/7 in the foyer. A very small indoor pool is on ground floor, although we didn’t try it. Free wifi was reasonable. There’s a gimmicky fake UFO in the carpark, as with most hotels in Roswell.

Minor annoyances: Had there been an internal lake in Roswell, the guest next door would have set off a Tsunami with the effort from his 6am door slam. Whilst the hotel can’t help guest behaviour, they can choose to space guests out a little when it’s not busy. With only a dozen or so cars in the carpark the nights of our stay, it was unfortunate they chose to bunch everyone close together. As a result, there was plenty of noise (it was NYE also).

The hotel seems to be more popular with sales/tradespeople and truck drivers, so expect plenty of noisy, early risers. We could also hear our neighbour’s shower and toilet through the wall.

The carpets on stairways to rooms and hallways are quite worn and grotty, and whilst this doesn’t impact on stay, it gives an indication of overall maintenance standards. Hallways reeked of cigarette smoke. The room wasn’t the cleanest we’ve stayed in, but it wasn’t completely filthy.

Furniture in the room is the usual pastel-rose hotel chain style, and are a little tired and worn.

The hotel isn't particularly close to anything much, and around a 10 minute drive into more 'central' Roswell.

Overall, a bit of a disappointment. I wouldn’t stay again.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms further from reception are probably the quietest.
