Owner description: Christopher “Kit” Carson, is perhaps Taos' most famous and controversial resident. He was a fur trapper among the earliest Western explorers, a scout during the first mapping of pioneer trails, a cattle and sheep rancher, a transcontinental courier, U.S. Native American agent, and an officer in the United States Army. Yet he was more than any of those things. Some people say he was a hero who was instrumental in opening up the West. Others say he was a rugged frontiersman who understood the ways of Native Americans better than any other Westerner. Still others maintain that he was an Indian hater whose only interest was to fight and kill Native Americans. He never accepted any of these labels, and neither have modern biographers who have portrayed him as an enigmatic Purchased by Kit Carson for his bride Josefa in 1843, this 3-room adobe home displays artifacts, antique firearms and other pioneer belongings, Kit Carson memorabilia and an exhaustive supply of books about New Mexico.

Architecture and history enthusiasts dream. Small collection, but significant and compelling. Museum staff knowledgeable and very willing to answer questions.

This house museum is small, but interesting. The original main house comprised three rooms. There is an addition that was made by the family at a later date and a room that was converted into the modern gift shop. The tour starts with a History Chanel video on the early life of Kit Carson (20 min). There are lots of interesting artifacts from his life and related bits around the time. The museum is worth the $6 entry fee and the hour you spend inside, particularly if you are interested in Western history.

A chance to visit the memorabilia of a Western scout. And education of what was happening as the West was opened up for the wagon trains.

We really enjoyed this museum. It's very small, but I found the history of Kit Carson to be fascinating.
