Was in the area and decided to visit. I remember reading about Kit Carson when I was a kid and this was a real treat seeing where he lived at one time. Thought he'd lived here in his younger days & didn't realize that he had purchased this home as a wedding gift for his wife and 7 of their 8 children were born and raised in the home.

Surprised my Dad for Christmas with a trip to Taos specifically to visit Kit Carson’s museum. Travelled from Pennsylvania only to find the museum was closed for renovations. Totally understandable to renovate and such, however, not a thing on their website, their voicemail, nothing alerting tourists to the closure. Arrive at 10am to find a sign on the door saying they were closed. There were 6 other visitors arriving the same time only to find it closed. Very disappointing to say the least especially when the primary purpose of the trip was to visit this museum. Prior to booking the trip, I spoke to an employee when I specifically asked if January was a bad time to visit. She said actually it’s a great time to visit because there’s not a lot of tourists. Call ahead and then double check again!

Taos Plaza and arts district. Interesting and fun. Nice shopping and art displays and studios. Great summer vacation area.
Bring some walking shoes. Go and have have some special made tea at Tea O Graphy on Kit Carson Street. And see the Kit Carson home and museum.

Masons enter free to Kit Carson Home and Museum. In the first room, a movie documentary is interesting (even to kids) tells about Kit Carson. The three other rooms in this house are loaded with artifacts. The original front door to the house is boarded, so the entrance is in the back. Imagine Kit Carson, his children, and wives in the era and how they slept, ate, and functioned in this small house. The entrance is a bit pricy for what there is, but still worthwhile. Bathrooms are outside in another building. Don't miss Kit and his family graves two blocks away in the Kit Carson Park and Cemetery. You can recognize it by the flying American flag.
