“Lifestyles of the rich and famous”

A beautiful Gatsby-like mansion on Long Island's Gold Coast (North Shore). Really gives a great picture of what life was like for the rich and famous in the 19th and early 20th centuries. An elegant mansion with beautiful furnishings, separate wings with taxonomic displays of the fish and animals caught by the family on their travels, a planetarium, gardens and a great view of Long Island Sound.

“Historic Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2012

Beautiful Spanish Revival mansion with an interesting history of William K Vanderbilt II. It is loaded with specimens and dioramas to rival any museum of natural history. It also houses a mummy and collections inspired by his passion for boating and motor cars. In addition, it is a wonderful Vanderbilt mansion to enjoy as you would in Newport Rhode Island. The Planetarium and it's observatory is reopening in the Spring of 2012 after a major technological make-over. My children love this beautiful site located overlooking Northport Harbor on Long Island. It is also home to weddings, workshops, school field trips, summer camps and wine tastings. For a long time, it's funding has been in trouble and I cannot urge you enough to patronize this idyllic Suffolk County Museum and take in all it has to offer!

“Amazing place to wander around.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2012

After years of living on Long Island, I finally took the time to visit this estate last summer. It is beautiful and remarkable but has fallen under disrepair over the years. If you can look past the decline, you can appreciate the beauty of what it once was.

Bring a picnic and relax on the grounds.

We skipped the planetarium. We went for the view

“Interesting and historical... may be lost on the little ones”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2011

We visited with our family, including our 2 grandchildren. Our main reason was for the Planetarium- which is always a good experience. It's educational and keeps everyone interested. Plus, there's enough variable shows to pick one that is best suited for your group (call ahead to get schedule)... HOWEVER- the Planetarium is currently undergoing renovations, so watch for their reopening.
The museum is a wonderful collection of artifacts from the Vanderbilt family, and in my opinion is a must-see for any Long Island history buffs. It is a museum, so keep that in mind if you are bringing small children. They will lose interest quickly, so you may want to travel with them on the lovely grounds and look out over the water.
There is a souvenir shop, but it was closed before we could get to it.
We'll go back again after the planetarium reopens!
