Visited this restaurant several times. The location was excellent, and the food and service was first class. A bit more expensive than other restaurants, but well worth it for the quality of the food, ambience and relaxing location.

We had a taxi bring us here from Kololi for the evening - there were 6 of us and he offered us a three hour wait and return journey for 800 Dalasi.

The crocs were on bathing by the pool and we had a cracking view from the table we were shown to.

We started with cocktails (and beers) whilst looking through the menu. They were amazing.

The food was delicious, lots of choice and the salad was the freshest we had in The Gambia. Between us we had fish dishes, curry and chicken skewers.

We chose the sharing plate of desserts for afters - this ended up being home made cakes which were still warm from the oven (chocolate brownie, coconut, and almond & cherry) with vanilla ice cream and extra thick cream. Stunning!

Ann, the owner came and had a chat with us as well - she so obviously loves her business and was straight on hand when there were a couple of power cuts later on in the evening!

A great night all round even with the cheesy 80’s duo with their backing tracks and keyboard!!!!

Having booked Ngala Lodge through the excellent Gambia Experience, we were sent a useful guide book that also contained discount vouchers to local restaurants, including Calypso, which also benefits from a good on-line reputation.
We visited 3 times, with different experiences each time, leaving us with an overall conclusion that we will not be returning, despite having booked a return holiday to Fajara in August.
Calypso is 90% location and experience, and 10% everything else, as it enjoys an almost beach-front location with a natural crocodile pool between the gardens and the beach.
The outdoor eating is within a number of circular open huts that give good shade, are lit at night, and afford plenty of room between you and the next hut along.
Our first visit was for lunch, and as a first visit, the novelty of watching crocs slide in and out of the water justified the visit. We enjoyed a couple of rather excellent home-made burgers, served with salad and thin fries, while taking a few dozen obligatory photos.
This visit, along with a look at the evening menu, prompted a return for dinner a few days later, where we both opted for peppered steaks.
The first disappointment was no particular separation between day and evening service; we expected at least table cloths, but dinner was served on the same gloss painted metal table that lunch – and indeed just a tea and coffee – were served on through the day; while the steaks were first class, they came with the same salad and thin fries as the lunch menu; no fresh veg, no speciality potatoes, simply a pub style main with salad and fries. I was beginning to wonder if Calypso was a one trick pony, and my disappointment grew when I was charged an eye watering 450 Dalasi for 2 scoops of ice-cream.
This was by no means a historically bad meal, it was simply not as good as others we had enjoyed – at the same price point – during our holiday.
Our third and final trip was again for lunch, as I wanted to get some better pics of the crocs, with a camera not a phone. We opted for the first hut as you enter, which with hindsight is to be avoided; as Calypso seems to have a pretty casual and relaxed attitude to non-customers wandering in and out to see the crocodiles, we ended up with half a dozen Hispanic type women in bikinis surrounding our table, and backing themselves into our space, bumping tables and chairs as they took loads of photos; they did not ask for a table, neither did they buy anything.
I asked the waiter if there was not a dress code in operation, and as a Muslim country, if he thought this was acceptable behaviour in a restaurant; his answer was ‘I agree, but nothing I can do about it’ . . .
Maybe not, (or rather they choose not to); plenty I can do however, which is to vote with my feet and spend my Dalasi elsewhere when I return.

We are intrigued by your review. Gambia Experience booklet describes Calypso as “ excellent informal dining”. We are a beach bar/restaurant. Not fine dining although we are pleased you appreciated the food.
If you had looked more carefully at the menu you would have seen a variety of side orders including potato dishes, rice, salads & dishes with vegetables
Even at Ngala lodge you will have noticed that they put up protection against the wind & dust. We are completely open & cannot have table cloths. Instead we have attractive placemats & pristine white cotton napkins. The tables are not metal but painted mahogany.& always spotless.
Maybe you did not explore the other side of the restaurant on the beach. Free sun beds & hammocks. Hence the beachwear although we totally agree that modesty is important. Unfortunately some tourists all over the world, not just Calypso , lack respect & sensitivity. The group were eating & drinking on the beach side.
As for “Hispanic” oops- sounds like Donald Trump!!
Always important to check your facts.
And finally- a zoo is a place for captive animals.
The crocs, monkeys, monitor lizards & huge variety of birds came on their own. Be happy that they have found a safe haven.
We hope this is helpful.

An absolutely brilliant place to go. Had a superb meal served by extremely friendly staff. Saw crocodiles, monitor lizards, monkeys and various types of birds whist eating.

Well worth a visit.

If you want good food, great service and a fantastic location look no further. The owners have put in many years of staff training and it shows. After a hard day relaxing go and watch the sun go down with a Julbrew or glass of wine and be pampered.
The home made Burgers are almost as good as mine
