At the time of writing, the Gao region is generally considered unsafe for travel, due to recent terrorist activity and kidnappings, so before travelling do check out the situation. The Tomb of Askia is very striking. If you have visited Djenne, Mopti etc. and liked the mud mosques, you'll appreciate the architecture here as well. Due to the remote location, the heat and perhaps questions over security, we found it was very quiet at the tomb - just us and the caretaker - though it is also a functioning mosque, so it may depend on the time of day. A tranquil atmosphere and an impressive, ancient building.
