“Best Authentic Japanese in Hudson Valley”
Reviewed 11 January 2012

Japanese food is not just sushi. Noodles are perhaps as important a source of nutrition for Japanese and certainly more affordable. At Gomen, noodles are the main courses not an after thought as at sushi places. I come here when I'm hungry and want a hot, healthy, authentic, fast meal, a friendly conversation and good fast service. You can linger here with your friends or come solo. After a meal here you will feel good inside and out.

“Excellent service and noodles”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

Though the restaurant has moved to a smaller space, we still love it. The owner is so personable, and she really cares about the quality of her food. The noodles here are authentic and delicious! We also had a kabocha squash-turkey appetizer that was amazing. Avoid the gyoza, as they are overpriced and no where near the best that I've had. But go with the dairy-free dessert sampler, my personal favorite. :)

“The real deal”
Reviewed 26 December 2010

Having lived in NYC for 20+ years (scores of good and real Japanese restaurants) and now in the Hudson Valley, it's nice to finally find a joint north of White Plains that is this good and is actually Japanese owned and operated. No disrespect to the fine cultures and cuisines of China, etc, but they should stick to what they do best, and stop trying to jump on the band-wagon by advertising themselves as serving sushi and other Japanese dishes - they simply don't possess the subtly for it. Though this place isn't in the quaint little few-block walking area of town, it's worth the short drive back up Main St (though you could walk it in a few minutes.) The other 2 'Japanese' restaurants in town are NOT Japanese (though Hokkaido has a nice vibe and the food is not bad.)

“Honest, homestyle Japanese cooking at its finest- the real deal!”
Reviewed 15 December 2010

Delicious, honest Japanese home-cooking in a relaxed atmosphere. The nabeyaki-udon is out-of-this-world amazing- perfect for a chilly fall or winter evening. (In the summer, I prefer the zaru-soba's savory goodness.) While all the dishes I've tried, including the sushi, have always been yummy, Gomen-Kudasai really excels at world-class noodles. As many ingredients as possible are organic and locally sourced, they have some good sakes to choose from, and the teas are outstanding as well (not to mention the desserts!) This is a place that cares about food- traditional, carefully crafted dishes that are satisfying, delicious, and nutritious. This is the real deal: homestyle Japanese cooking at its best.

“Amazing Authentic Japanese”
Reviewed 14 December 2010

This place is absolutely amazing. First of all, I've been to Japan and this is the only Japanese restaurant that actually tastes exactly like it does in Japan. So:

1. Its completely authentic, run by Japanese people who grew up knowing what Japanese food is supposed to taste like. And they do it with such subtlety and care. Its inspiring.

2. The atmosphere is incredible. Unlike all other restaurants that are slowly putting TV's everywhere, Gomen Kudasai puts up local art, and engages customers to the finer parts of life with really decorative beautiful space with great lighting.

3. They are one of the only restaurants to have events like book signings, art exhibitions, live jazz, japanese cultural evens (like tea ceremonies), etc.

4. So much of their food is locally produced and ORGANIC. On the menu they put a list of all of the locally produced products they use. Its almost a page long!

They just got a sushi bar recently and the sushi is incredible.

There's still so much more to say, but why bother - just go and you'll see how different and great it is.
